987 Boxster Gear Oil

Postby ChuckS on Fri Oct 26, 2012 11:28 am

My son, Greg, has a 987 Boxster with a 6-speed. He is replacing the clutch (105k) and is looking for alternatives to the uber expensive Porsche labeled gear oil.
I believe it is a 75-90 weight. We have heard all sorts of concerns about what oil is used in the P-car gear box.

Does anybody have any real world experience and recommendations?

Thanks,
Chuck

Yes, I use Redline 75W90NS in a 986 6-speed (open diff), it works great, and it's held up under, um, "extremely harsh" usage conditions...

I just changed my gear oil today. I was led to the Red Line 75W/90NS (I believe Russel has a typo in his post) by a lot of guys on the Cayman Register using it. 1 Gallon sells for $62 from Pelican Parts.

After a quick test drive, I have to say they shifting is better than with the stuff that came out of trans. Ask me again in two years...
