964 KTS-300 9288 Bosch Hammer System Adaptation

Postby DonTraver on Tue Nov 26, 2013 6:22 am

I bought a KTS-300 9288 Bosch Hammer while I was in Koln, Germany. I'm still a tool junky. It came with complete instructions, but they really don't explain all the functions too well.

I've had a intermittent problem with the idle, especially when coming to a stop, engine dies. I replaced the Idle Speed Stabilizer in Paris and that helped some.

When Don Clark still owned Extreme Motorsports and I'd get that problem, he'd hook up his hammer, do something and it would cure it for about a year or so. I'm just not sure what he did.

So the question is, what exactly does the System Adaptation program do and are there any hints anyone can give me about running the program.

The hammer says the engine has to be well warmed up and running at idle when you start the Adaptation program, anything else?

Still enjoying Europe, leave for Toulouse in a couple days and then Spain for the winter where its warm. Froze my butt off in Innsbruck, Lucerne, and now Lyon. Time to go south.

Don, I hope you will write an article for the Windblown Witness or even Panorama about your grand adventure!

Don you are on the right track,

Hook the tool up and drive the car to get it warm.
Come to a stop and make sure all users are off.
(A/C lights, blowers all off)
Run system adaptation.
911>DME > > system adaptation (I think)

Press the next button and then START.
It will take a little time and then say completed.

Sould run much better when completed.

Always good to hear from Don.

Steve, perhaps you can explain what a Bosch Hammer System is. Perhaps its what I need.

I have a '77 911S. Intermittantly its naughty. Sometimes after 20 plus miles it won't idle down. Stays from 2,000 to 2,500 rpm. While this is occuring it will often shut off at speed. I turn the key off and then on again and its O.K. for a little while and then repeats itself. Sometimes when I turn the key back on it backfires. I replaced the ignition switch thinking that perhaps it was faulty or had a loose connection. Made no difference. I always burn 91 octane fuel. Engine temperature is O.K. Is it too lean, too rich? Is the hammer I need a ball peen to beat this thing into submission? :banghead:

Sure Ted, nothing like a little diagnostic tool history to put the membership to sleep.
This is a Bosch 9288 / KTS-300 diagnostic tester (Commonly known as a Bosch Hammer for obvious reasons)
Image

This was the second tester available from Porsche and way ahead of the industry in on-board diagnostics.
It will work on late 944S2, 968, 964 and '95 993 with its standard cable.
It will also work on 96-98 993 with the optional OBD-II cable.
It will hook up to engine, climate control and airbag systems on these cars.
The system adaptation like Don was asking about is like Ctrl-Alt-Delete for your Porsche.
It clears all adaptations reloads base files and resets everything to zero. What you do after a major service.

But your 77 911 is old school, a real hammer would be a better choice.
You are describing a classic ignition issue for these cars.
But you are describing multiple unrelated issues. (Your distributer is likely very worn)
First replace the points taking care to clean the contacts with a paper towel or piece of linen (I use a work shirt)
Set the points to 37 degrees of dwell. Connect the meter to the distributer wire only! Don't connect anywhere else or bad things will happen.
Do not even think of using a feeler gauge!

This will calm the tach down, stop the intermittent failure and back fire when switching the key off/on.
Let me know how that goes and I can tell you about the other dozen things to check on that model.
It's just old and probably hasn't had a real service in decades.
A bunch of adjustments and it will probably be running like a Swiss watch.

Thanks Steve, appreciate the help. I'll run the System Adaptation program later today.

It's always nice to have a clue about what you're doing, lol.

Going to the Art Museum here in Lyon today and leaving for Toulouse in the morning. They have a really great Art Museum in Toulouse. I've been to it before, but I could spend all day there and probably will.

I've started/tried to write an article about my travels in Europe. Problem I'm having is trying to condense 2 1/2 years so far and it will be close to 4 years by the time I finish this 3rd tour. I've traveled over 60,000 miles, 186 laps on the Nurburgring, 26 countries, +200 cities, +200 castles, +100 cathedrals, +400 museums. I've also kept a journal that's over 400 pages now. Well I've got a year to put it together, maybe.

Thanks again Steve.

Later, Don

Don,
You are living the dream...
Glad to say I know you.
(And more than a little bit jealous...)

Happy Holidays.

Happy Thanksgiving to everyone. I'm a happy guy today. :D

I left Lyon for Toulouse around 0830, the morning rush hour was still going strong. The RSA's idle was rock solid when I came up on a stop or traffic light and when I had to stop for the Toll booths, she came down from 3400 rpm and I don't think she dipped at all when she got to idle rpm.

I cruised most of the way between 130-140 kph. I still have this problem of thinking a Porsche should be passing everyone and I did, lol.

Thanks again for the help Steve.
