Car weight points

Postby Jad on Tue Mar 08, 2005 11:04 am

Ok, I have read the AX and TT rules and my car should weigh 2998 per the owners manual. So, WHEN must my car weigh 2998 (or 50 lbs less). At the start of the race, at the end, with a full tank of gas, empty, with driver, etc.

I have a 21 gallon tank, so that is ~125 lbs in gas. Just trying to understand the limits since I am no longer hundreds of pounds over.

Jad, normally the weighing is done at the conclusion of a race. Being that we are not that strict, you should probably pick the lightest weight you would run the car at. Like a few gallons in the tank at the conclusion of a time trail. Then if you were challenged you would be legal in terms of points for weight reduction.

That is true of most racing, but I don't think that is how our rules are written and would like to just understand our rules. It doesn't matter to me as I have about 12 free points in KP, but was curious with all the weight talk recently.

Jad
We are working on weight rules clarification and fine tuning for next year.
But since TTing is not racing, but a "Driver education" event your car must be within the weight limits as you cross the finish line.

21 gal. X 6.2# per gallon = 130.2

Also, keep in mind which tires/wheels you will be using for timed runs. I switched from my 18" CCW + Toyo's to my 17" Kenisis + Hoosiers and the car was ~35# lighter (with approximately the same fuel load).

Steve, not to be a problem as you are just the messenger, but it has been pointed out to me that wouldn't that interpretation mean theoretically every SS car would take 4 points? The weight from the owners manual is what a car should way (assuming no options) with a full tank and by the end of the race, it will be near empty, thus 130# lighter which is close to 8 points if you remove the spare tire, floor mats and tools?

Thus my confusion. Also, I am thinking of installing a 55 gallon gas tank in the hatch, thus when full of gas, the car gets 330 lbs plus the normal 130# which can be gone at the end of the race  for a dry weight of 2488 with zero points

Jad it has been my experience that most cars are well above curb weight, giving you a bit of a cushion. If in doubt weigh your car.

You are not running an enduro here. you will fill up Saturday night, run a practice and then timing. With plenty of time to fill up before timing.

As far as your 8-point issue...(please Jad) Close to 8 points?
That is the thing I love about rules. You can go right up to the line and if you don't go over, you are OK.

A ticket for almost 56? Not!
The light was almost red? Not!
Almost TTOD? Not...
