Proportional Brake Control in a Cayenne

Postby surferr on Mon Jan 13, 2014 1:39 pm

Anyone else with a Cayenne have a problem installing a Proportional Brake Control ? The manufacturer of my trailer axels, Dexter, recommended I use a Predator DX2 control with them. I ordered the controller and have been to Trailer Supply on El Cajon Blvd , Ricks RV and Porsche of San Diego and non of them will install it. Kind of annoying since it looks somewhat simple. Any help from Porsche land people would be appreciated

A quick Google search came up with several hits, this may help.

What year Cayenne? Does it have the factory trailer kit option?

Talk to Paul Young.
He had SD Porsche install his.

I think there is only one brand that will work on the Cayenne.
Controller brand is more tow rig dependent than trailer dependent.

Does your SUV have the LED rear brake lights? If so, ask to speak to the senior tech/installer at Trailer Supply on El Cajon Blvd. The guy has installed them on German made SUVs and said that the LED lights is what causes the problem with installation. If your truck has the factory installed tow package, he claims that all German SUVs (Porsche, Audi, BMW and MB) have the same supplier and there is another step to install the brake controller. It takes a little more time, but the method is the same for all the aforementioned brands. Good luck.

I had the same issue with my BMW in 2007. The problem is a VERY complex electrical system that freaks out when additional load is put on the system and sends warning signals and causes lots of problems. I would recommend the dealer as it will be a warrantied item in case it causes problems or fry's other components.

PS - The F150 with a built in brake controller is SO much better, cleaner, nicer solution. Why can't the germans offer that for $5k or something ridiculous like other options. :beerchug:

Hello and thanks for all the replies. I started with Porsche of SD and Ray Roper said they wouldn't install & suggested SD trailer supply in El Cajon and they wouldn't touch it. Sent me to Ricks that wanted $800 to install. !? Long story short I ended up at EXPRESS PERFORMANCE CENTER IN SANTEE. Absolutely a great experience. Used the trailer to go to CVR last DE/TT and the controller worked perfectly. Thanks again for all your input. See you Saturday night at the Yardhouse :beerchug:
