Lug Stud Conversion?

Postby jbrennen on Fri Jun 26, 2015 4:59 pm

Two questions...

Anybody running the Rennline Wheel Stud conversion kit? Are they solid? I've had mixed experience with aftermarket lug studs and nuts in the past, including having aftermarket studs that actually snapped in two while I was driving the car -- it's no fun.

Also, I'm assuming that by a reasonable interpretation of the autoX Street Stock rules, these would be an allowable modification, right? The rules allow for aftermarket wheels which require different lug bolts, so lug bolts aren't off limits -- and a lug stud and lug nut are really just a two piece lug bolt, right?

Jack,
As to your second question, yes wheel stud conversions like Rennline's kit are Zone-8 legal.

Jack,
I'm curious why you would want to do this? To make frequent wheel changes easier? To fit aftermarket wheels? I know the 997 GT3 guys do it to get rid of the centerlock system, but on a Cayman?
Thx,
TT

Mainly this. It's not a big deal, just a convenience thing. But I wouldn't want to go with something weaker than stock.

I already have aftermarket wheels which are compatible with the stock lug bolts, so I'm cool with that.

Also, a fear in the back of my head is the idea of mangling the stock threading on the bolt holes in the hub. On my '03 Evo 8, I trashed a few studs with frequent wheel changes, but at least replacing a stud was easy on their hub design. Re-threading a bolt hole in the hub (or replacing a hub) is more of a pain. My theory is that if I trashed the outer end of a screw-in lug stud like the Rennline, just unscrew it, toss it, and fit another one.
