Fire Extinguisher Recharge?

:?: Posting as I searched the forum and a match didn't come up. We have one of those smallish units (it's red; an AMEREX Halon unit), the dial on which has gone into the "recharge" red. My observation is that many of us have similar units in our cars, so my question is: where do we go to have them recharged? or is the norm to simply buy a new one (and do what with the old one, recycle as hazardous waste)? Thanks for your help. :D

Jim,
I'd let my fingers do the walking and call some of the local fire extinguisher service companies and ask them the price of a refill/service on your unit. Try these:

I'm pretty sure a refill will be cheaper than buying new, but who knows these days?

TT

+1 for Miramar Fire Equipment. I used them for several years for the AX Equipment team recharge & new purchases. Prices were good. Tell them that PCA sent you. :) Its a small shop with Don and his daughter, so they do send out for recharges every Wednesday and they come back 1wk later.

Halon is very expensive to recharge since its been phased out. Halotron is one of the new types. I think our 5lb'er (smaller ones you'd have in the car) were $120(???). More expensive than the basic ones, but won't harm car parts & paint like generic fire extinguishers.
