iPhone mount for TT use?

Postby terryb on Tue Oct 08, 2019 9:29 pm

Am I correct in recalling that we don't allow windshield suction cup mounts for DE/TT? If so, any recommendations for mounting an iPhone 7S near the dash for data collection? I've got Harry's Lap Timer, an Emprum GPS dongle, a Kiwi4 ODB2 plug and a GoPro Hero5 Black.

Thanks!

I've just reviewed the rules on this.

https://www.zone8.org/assets/docs/2019/2019Z8Rules.pdf

The spare tire, tools and jack may be removed and must be removed if they are
not securely mounted. Any device (cameras, lap timers, gps loggers, etc.)
mounted inside the car must be firmly attached to a solid point on the interior.
Interior suction cup mounts are allowed only if additionally secured with
adhesive such as silicone or RTV. Digital cameras or other devices mounted
outside the car must be mechanically attached to the car; if suction cup mounts
are used on exterior devices, the device must be securely tethered to a solid point
on the car (bumper, side view mirror etc.) to prevent putting other drivers or
corner workers at risk.

I have a suction cup RAM mount that I tether to my instrument binnacle with beefy zip ties.

Thank you Rob. I have a RAM suction cup mount so I'll add some silicone sealant, though those suction mounts grip so tightly it feels like you could remove a windshield with them!

Terry,

Check with Steve. It isn't really about how secure the suction cup is, it MUST be tethered so IF the suction cup stops working, the phone won't fly around the cabin.

I bought a mount for use at the recent chucky event.
It "plugs into" the car's CD slot.
It worked well for me.
A bit close to the shifter in my 996, but I never touched the phone inadvertently.
I didn't watch the phone while driving, but it worked well as a platform for later review.

I got one of these: http://www.rennline.com/Porsche-991_981 ... o/PM01.04/
It screws into the dash so the mount isn't going anywhere. I also put a rubber tether on it to further secure the phone.
With the magnet and tether, the phone effectively becomes part of the dash and isn't going to come loose.
