Clutch helper spring lubrication

Very stiff clutch (and much stiffer about half way down) has been traced to lubrication of the helper spring (multi-leafed heart shaped device mounted to throwout bearing activation lever). I have tried soaking it with engine oil, WD-40, and sewing machine oil. It works for a few days only. Is there a better way, or just replace? Car is '78 SC

I've learned this may be a broken helper spring. I examined it while someone else worked the clutch and didnt see anything obvious. How do I identify a broken spring, if that is what it is?
