944 Tire Recommendation?

Postby Jackie Lu on Wed Aug 17, 2005 7:59 pm

I could use some expert opinions regarding what tires I should get for my 944 to stay is GSS class...no points. :?: After the DE last weekend, they're down to cords. 215/60-15's are what's currently on the vehicle. I tried the Tire Rack, but am new at this and can't determine what sort of information (besides the car make, model and year) should even be input. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks in advance for your advice!

A decent tire to use both AX and street and still be pretty cost effective is Yokohama AVS ES 100 in size 225/50/15. There are currently at least 2 944 using this tire. Still a good enough tire to use on the streets without being afraid of a little mist on the road.

The 225 ES100 would also be my recommendation.

Jackie, that's what I use for street tires. The ES 100's last a good long time, have great stick for your Street Stock competitive needs, and hold very good traction in the rain for those winter-month driving days. If you plan to continue A-X's at the Q on one set of tires, these sould last a good 18 months, with regular rotation. My "street only" wear has been good for 24 months ... although Sunday's DE put a serious bite in them :? .

225/50/15 is a good size.

PM me for a good tire company who stocks them here in town.

Thanks for the feedback. It's been pointed out to me that I don't really drive my car on the street only at the auto-x. Would that change your recommendation?

S0-3's, MX and Toyo T1-R's have been suggested as well. Any thoughts on those tires?

I don't know of any good direct time comparisons of those tires, I just know the ES100 is pretty good at everything from my experience and it very reasonably priced. There may be a few tenths between the tires, but not a lot of difference, so I would go mostly on price amoung the tires mentioned and you should be set.

Jackie,
I am currently running the AVS ES100's on my 944 and I am happy with them. They seem to last and compared to the Falken H-12's or comparable Sumitomos they have a much better feel. My only complaint is they get pretty greasy when hot. I have heard good things from friends running the new Hankook Ventus RS-2 on non-Porsche cars as well (I recall someone running them on a 996 at the last auto-x). The ES100's are a good safe bet and they make them in a 225 50-15 which will give you a little more meat all around. Check out tirerack.com that is where I purchased mine.
