Cayman & Cayman S classification

Postby bryanearll on Tue Sep 13, 2005 7:51 pm

I wonder what class the Cayman and Cayman S will be dovetailed into?

At 295hp the Cayman S will have all of the ponies, but be lighter weight, have better suspension... Heck, the average Boxster smokes the 2001 996, much less an improved and stiffer chassis 'Boxster'.

What are the powerful minds thinking on how to classify these new cars?

Well for some time the powers put the 986S in with 996's and 993's in the same class. Of course this finally changed through some extensive discussion.

Obviously the Cayman (what is the type number for this? 987? They really need to use type number rather than these marketing names, anyway) will kick the butt of early 996's and all 986 variants, so it will likely be in a class of its own. But looking at the chart it looks like in the infinite wisdown they put the 987 with the 986S and put the 987S with the 993's and 996's. If you want an auto-x car that will post top time of day the "S" will be that car.

I'm thinking the Caymen S should be put in with the GT-3's group? Power to weight ratios and handling characteristics may make these two cars somewhat close in actual lap times?

There's no doubt in my mind the CaymenS, with the right tires and suspension set-up will annihilate the 996/997, and 987S cars at A-X's.....

Just a guess.......

I didn't realize they were developing a non-S version of the Cayman.

My guess for the Cayman S would be O with the '02+ 996 and 997.

weight to power for the models in O

'02 996: 9.269
997: 9.465
Cayman S: 9.997

Seems like the Cayman will be slightly disadvantaged in O, but will probably still win...
