Indoor Kart Racing in Carlsbad

I tried out the indoor kart racing at K1Speed in Carlsbad today. What a blast. The karts actually go fast and at the end of your racing they give you a printout of your times, standing, etc. You can even access your racing times on-line later.

If you mention you are with the Porsche Club they will knock $5 off the non-member price.

I noticed on the web site, they have a Blue Passing flag. Can this be true? Do they actually use the blue flag on "blockers?"

Jad and I were absolutely pounded by a guy at Miramar who literally drove Jad and I into the barriers with his moronic blocking style of driving.

Yes! They give the flag to the slower drivers and basically tell them to pull over and let you pass. They are using the flag a lot so that the faster drivers can keep in front of the pack.

It is funny, at the tight indoor kart tracks, the bad drivers are much harder to pass than the good ones. Good drivers give you some room when you pull next to them, bad drivers ignore you or drive into you as you are passing them. It is easy to take them out, harder to do it without getting black flagged

Also, quite embarrassing when a 10 year old girl decides to hit the brakes WAY early or on a straight and you plow into them, not that I have done it, just heard stories

Here's a technique I use for getting past those drivers who are driving really poorly AND blocking you. Mind you, I don't mean defending, I mean blocking.
Get right up on their bumper before the braking zone. When they get to their braking point, with you ON their bumper, let them brake for both of you! After they have gently understeered offline about 4-5 feet, use your brakes and cut under them. No contact sound, no snapping of necks to betray the contact from across the way. It just looks like they understeered and you passed.

Great!! I'm in! The schedule is a bit tight the next 2 weeks, but an afternoon sometime this month would work for me.

Oh, and Tim .... your technique of "braking zone oversteer" is brilliant!

All of us must have been thinking the same thing! We have what promises to be an excellent tech session scheduled at K1 on Wednesday, November 17. K1's "Hot Shoe" (one of the top 5 kart drivers in the US and a good guy!) will give us presenation, then we will have the opportunity to drive (there will be a cost). These electric karts are powerful, 20 hp, and fast! There is little noise and no gas smell. In short, K1 is a great venue! Borris Said's Suburu is on display, as well as and Indy race car. Look for a formal announcement in the next Witness, and on the website.
