Boxster Sport Exhaust Recommendations

Postby twitte on Mon Jul 31, 2006 6:46 pm

I'm trying to find a good sounding sport exhaust for a 2000 Boxster. Is there anyone out there that has one that they really like and that they would recommend? I called Black Forest today and they mentioned several brands but suggested that I listen to the exhaust system(s) before buying one. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks

Ted,

I tried out many exhausts incl: two B&B exhaust (the 1st generation and the second) both sounded great but I lost low end torque and probably horsepower. Then I purchased one from GHL (1st generation) which I returned after 1 week due to resonance which made the car sound like a Honda Accord. I hear the new generation GHL are better. Then I replaced it with a Dual Tip Dansk which cracked after 6 months but worked fine.

From my experience, what works and sounds the best on a Boxster is:

1) Remove the snorkel before the airbox (10 min work) and the car sounds and breathes better.
2) Don't replace the airfilter with a K&N or BMC since they will ruin the MAS(mine went after 6 years of using a K&N). But, rather cut of the foam from the OEM paper airfilter for more intake sound. (10min work)
3) Install a Porsche Sports Exhaust (the best but rare) with the valve set to be open or get a Boxster S exhaust which is 6 pounds lighter and sounds better also comparing to the 1999 2.5l exhaust. (1-2 hours work)

Boxster Exhaust Recommendations

Martin,

Thanks for the information and advice. I will look into what you suggested. I also went to the Fabspeed web page and they had photos of the exhaust systems that you mentioned with details on the problems associated with each manufacturer.

Ted -
I have the Dansk exhaust (the one that looks like a big sausage). I like the way it sounds (not too loud), and the resonance is under control. There are alot of two-muffler systems (GHL is the loudest) but they all suffer from resonance at around 2500 to 3000 RPM. It has to do with the effective length of the muffler pipe. That's why all of the more civilized ones are one big muffler (the exhaust paths cross creating a longer effective length). I think the Fabspeed, Schnell, and FVD mufflers are all made by Dansk, who is the OEM supplier for stock Boxster mufflers. Dansk also makes a muffler which looks like a stock Boxster S muffler, but which is supposed to sound sportier (and also has interchangable tips, like a stock 03-04 muffler). The Stock 03-04 muffler is supposed to be a little louder, but I can't tell the difference. I got a good deal on my Dansk when Performance Products had a 20% off sale (I have no relationship with them, except that they have some of my money). You can hear my car at the next autocross (although part of what you will hear is the CAI).

Martin's right, in the seat, most of the time you will hear a difference in intake more.

Regards,
Russell

p.s. If you are thinking about any other mods (or want to go nuts), email me. I have touched or bought alot of Boxster accessories over the years.
