Ride in a 930 for last weeks east lot AX

Postby GeorgeB on Sun Oct 29, 2006 9:40 pm

I put camera mount in my car for last weeks AX and I never owned a video camera before. Still don't own one. Had to borrow one. So here is my first attempt recording in my car. Well actually its my second attempt. The first attempt I thought I hit the record button but some how murphys law came into effect. Also big thanks to my girlfriend Alisa who has a mac and was able to download off the mini DV (my pc had troubles... seen the recent commercial of the cool mac guy dressed nice and casual, and the uptight engineer pc guy in a sport coat?). This was our first time using the mac quicktime movie maker too. She did the creative work. Also I have provided the link to the file on youtube. My first time trying that out too. So with so many firsts, I apologize for what might possibly go wrong in the process. All I know if you go the following link -right now -the file will be there:

Two laps. The first lap on the video is actually my sloppy first timed run which some how was enough to win NSS. The second lap on the vid is earlier in the day and .58 quicker and nicer to watch. Enjoy.

How does it feel to be in the movies

Postby GeorgeB on Tue Oct 31, 2006 8:24 pm

Curt, I would enjoy creating something entertaining but my motivating force is to improve my driving skill. I cant even tell you how may times I have watched this video but I think it it will be way more fun to watch a DE so I am planning recording and editing a video the fri DE in november. I think it will be cool to see a car spinning in front of me... any volunteers?

Well, since I'm in the midst of switching from the Boxster to a 911, I'll probably oblige you in that spin request! Stay well back if you get behind me.

Curt,

My best guess estimate for your first spin will be in the second session. I know you don't want to spin in the first session with safety watching you. By the way, a GT3 is a 911 but let's be real here. That sounds like a hustler line to me. All I have is a 911, wanna run for pinks?

Oh, dang. I didn't know safety would be there watching. I think I just need to get this spin thing over with. Dave, you might talk to Jad about giving you points on your bet; he seems to think I will spin sooner.

Curt,

I believe there are those who feel the first lap will be the first spin for you. I have faith you'll wait a while. I think we'll all be relieved after you do the first spin. Just remember, both feet in. :D

Joking aside, as a newbie I tend to spin around the 3rd session. I am a bit cautious so the first session is feeling things out, the second I feel like I know what I am doing, and the third I am over confident because I haven't spun yet.

Since the DE will be my first DE in my new car I might be able to help you out with a spin. The DE should be fun! The videos are cool - I am trying to figure out how to get a camera mounted in my cayman!

I'll put on my safety hat here. Spins occur and it's part of learning the limits. The most important part is to build up to the limit gradually. You start to feel the limit before you reach it, if not, remember what you felt just before you spun. That would be the limit. Don't approach the limit too quickly. Don't try to save it when a spin happens and put both feet in. Safety hat off.

Have fun!!!

Your first DE

Postby GeorgeB on Fri Nov 03, 2006 9:45 am

Mark,

Congrats, looking forward to seeing you at the DE! They are fun and you get a lot more seat time than the AX. Putting my safety hat on- DE's are learning events where you learn to pay attention to more things at once. Its non competative and its important to stay within your limits. You might push the limit on the AX course where you won't on the DE track.
DE are very safe too although we are keeping Dave (the safety co-chair) busy on this thread making sure we stay politically correct. My bad for inviting a spin. However I will say I never spinned until after I was passenger (AX event) in my instructors car. He spinned and my next lap as a driver I spinned for the first time ( I'm a quick learner).

DE at the Q, good times!

Imo at a DE your car control skills should already be satisfactory. DE is more about learning to drive in traffic, improving your situational awareness.
That said I've seen some pretty embarrassing first session spins, some before they even got on the track.
TCRA at Big Willow Sunday morning a Radical spun into a hot pit light pole.

I like Jack Miller's policy if you should spin during the morning's first TT practice session, just bring it in your done for that session.
First session, cold track, cold car, cold tires, cold brain.
During the first session at a QDE the track will be loose/sandy.

Spinning happens but it is not necessary to do so to find your limits.
Some think crashing is just a way of finding your limits; I doubt air show pilots agree with this viewpoint.
