Go Karts - where? how old?

Postby Irksome on Sun May 27, 2007 8:03 am

I've heard lots of people talk about Karting as a fun experience, and also a great training method for improving driving skills. Where in San Diego county do I find karting? The last time I knew of one was 10 years ago, over on Miramar Road, and it was fun but not spectacular.

Also, my son is fascinated by the crazy stuff his dad is doing (he came out an watched the autocross yesterday). He's just turned 6. Are there any places he can drive or drive with me at that age? Boomers has some silly cars, but they put so many people on the track on such wimpy cars that it's really more of a bumper car experience than a driving experience.

Thanks in advance!

Hi Tom,

I go to K-1 in Carlsbad (off Palomar Airport road): http://www.k1speed.com/. Or rather, I used to go there before I started autox. Looks like I'll be going back soon though. After going to the autox with me yesterday, my son wants to try his hand at karting again.

The karts are not terribly fast, about 40 mph and are electric. They also have slower ones for the kids. Age is not a factor, however, there is some sort of height restriction. Check their site for details and times. If I remember correctly, there is normally a set time interval for the kids and after that, it's adults only.

K1 is a fun track as is Miramar Speed Circuit. It's also an indoor Kart track. It's a great way to learn how to take a line and improve your time

Miramar has gas karts opposed to K-1's electric.
I took my daughter to the Miramar beginning driving school for her 12th birthday and then we did some laps together afterwards. She tries to get me to take her back whenever she hears I am even thinking about going.
Really great time for her as well as the proud Papa (came in 3rd her first race)

Beginning Driving School (Children 12 and under and a minimum of 4 feet tall)
The beginning driving school is the best way to introduce your anxious driver to the fun and excitement of indoor kart racing. The course is taught by two instructors and the main focus is safety.

Great info, thanks guys! I've reviewed both of their web sites, and this was exactly what I was looking for. I'll be swinging by Miramar next weekend, I think, sounds like a good time.

We'll see how my son does, I think he's still too young, but I'm willing to let him try it out.

I guess K-1 changed their policy. I took my son there when he was 10 and the only rule was a height requirement. Looks like Steve saved you a trip up there. :-)
