POC Timing issues

Postby JHPGT3 on Sun Sep 21, 2008 6:09 pm

I'd like to point out that the official times from POC's Buttonwillow event this weekend have already been posted on MyLaps as of 5:00 p.m. today (Sunday, the day of the event)!
This is much more typical than what happened at LS (and this is what we expect).
I think they just couldn't believe some of those low times PCASDRers ran!! :D
Best, JP

Thanks John.
Yes timing was impeccable this WE.
The TT times were posted right after the sessions.
Too bad you didn t make it, the weather was excellent.
Paul was awesome :)

PCAers:
The configuration we ran was different than what we run at teh PCA TT.
The offramp is extended making the track slower than the configuration w ehave ran in the past.

Yes, It's about 3 seconds slower with the extended Off Ramp! I don't think I've ever done the new and improved "Offramp" very well. In the old config. you could get on the gas early and there was plenty of room to track out --not so with the new config. How did you like it?

I liked it. Once you realize you can go almost straight out from turn 2 and accelerate it's fine. Then you need to apex it properly and hold down the gas. After the second session I was enjoying the turn very much. I ran this config with PCA about 3 years ago.

Hmmm. Not sure that config. existed three years ago, Dave!
In any event, glad you found a way to conquer it.

Definitely prefer the old config, the turn in for this new offramp is much harder to nail but it was fun learning a new turn.

It might have been 2006. The mind gets fuzzy with age.

Here is my understanding of the names (might be wrong, though):
buttonhook: older, shorter turn 2
offramp: newer, longer turn 2

PCA Z8 TT ran the offramp in June 2006. In 2007, we were supposed to use the offramp, but the previous group spilled fluids all over it so we used the buttonhook instead.

I like both setups; the buttonhook is faster but the offramp is more difficult to get right, IMO.

Kris,

I agree with you. I think I like the offramp better though. More of a challenge but very rewarding when you hit it right.

If conditions are good/safe, our default tends to be what our results database (http://results.pcasdr.org/pca.php?database=tt) calls Clockwise/Star Mazda - Extended Buttonhook. We never know for sure though until we get there, unless the track informs us of issues ahead of time (which is rare, even if there are issues). Stay tuned, and always be on time for the drivers meeting to be informed.

The BW website shows both turns #2, but does not name either one of them:

Config "Race #1" uses the older, shorter turn 2. I have heard of the same config with the newer, longer turn 2 referred to as "Race #1A".

POC refers to the extended version as 1A --I think I might have even been the one to suggest that the first time we used it. FWIW, I spoke to the track manager last year about the two configurations and detrmined that, at least as respects POC, we could have either config. --it was our choice --they just needed to be notified in advance. I assume this would be the same for PCA. I believe (I have heard 2nd hand) the longer congig (1A) is the track's preferred and safer option.
