Track Driving School

Postby kary on Fri Nov 05, 2004 11:03 am

A small group of us are starting to look into the costs, logistics, and type of school we could have. We need to solicit some information from those that think they might want to participate. But before we ask those questions let's describe where we think this school might fit in the scheme of things.

First off, there are schools already out there that teach racing. These schools discuss passing strategies, race starts, and some car handling techniques. We do not want to complete with that since it is available in a number of places. Second, we already have a performance driving school that teaches basic driving techniques that are applicable to auto-x and street driving. The school we are proposing would not be teaching these techniques obviously. So we believe that we need a school that fits inbetween schools mentioned above that would teach some intermediate to advanced driving techniques for DE/Time trailers (i.e. racetrack driving techniques).

Next we are considering using professional instructors from some of the race schools that some of us have had experience with. The location for the school will likely be a track like SOW or possibly the Q or maybe the infield of the Speedway ;-). We will have to see what the school content results in to determine what type of facility we will need and how many instructors would be required. That will come later

In order to come up with a curriculum that would fit that niche, we would like to hear from those that are interested in this type of school as to what techniques they would like to learn that they are aware of. Obviously there might be techniques that you are not aware of, but in gathering all the Reponses and working with professional driving schools we can come up with one or two curriculums for a school. We might have intermediate and advanced, we will have to see how this works out.

We want to hear what will work for you DE/Time trialers, so please post here to let us know!

Thanks!

I would be interested. Something along the line of the Porsche Driving Experience at Barber Motorsports Park. I would like to learn how to heal-toe, trail braking, and general driving techniques for big track (as opposed to AX).

I beleive there is already a school at SOW, that will train you in your own car or one of their Celicas. They also have varied levels. I would be interested in seeing about a group rate for something like that.

Kary,

A year or two ago, Alan Johnson was very interested in helping to put on an advanced school. You may want to contact him and see if he is still interested as he at least has good name recognition. Apparently, MANY years ago PCA did have one at SOW that he taught at if I remember correctly.

I no longer have his phone number, but I am sure other members do.

Kary:

Some skills that the more advanced drivers might like to know about (IMHO):

- Initiate and control drift before the apex and carry through the corner.
- Trail-braking/Maximum Threshold Braking (Augmentation of Threshold Braking currently taught at PDS)
- Late apex pitch/catch-drift in decreasing radius turns
- Speed-Carry skills through corners (Minimum-braking / using cornering to scrub speed instead of braking)
-Transitions skills while keeping car at edge of traction coefficient (smooth on / off gas & smooth on / off brakes - super smooth hands on the wheel)
-Early turn-in initiation for smoother cornering
-Fastest line vs. prima facia line to carry more speed (Steve D. used to tell me to drive the line like I was surfing big waves. Totally changed the way I looked at / determined the best line for speed)

Anyway. Just some ideas....

Believe it or not, born in Long Beach and grew up in Imperial Beach. I surfed once or twice as a kid, but wasn't coordinated enough to make it real hobby 8) (... and you guys let me on track... silly people...) .

It's been a loonnggg time since I last surfed. At the risk of dating myself (and who else would  ), my last board was 11 feet, 10 inches. Nowadays, these young whippersnappers would cut that in half and make two boards.

Kary,

I believe Pahrump (Spring Mountain Motorsports Park) will be offering some interesting 2 day schools in their new Radicals. I just was there last Monday running the Radicals on Toyos and they were extremely enjoyable and were fast enough to keep things interesting.

The cars are extremely well balanced, relatively easy to catch, and can take passengers if need be. They have 6 or 7 cars and a few faster versions.
