Who was the one armed driver?

Postby Mmagus on Thu Nov 05, 2009 2:27 pm

Ok, something is driving me nuts, which admittedly requires only the minimum fare. In my floating around the web last month and reading up on Porsches I came across the account of an early driver from the 50's or early 60's who raced and won repeatedly but had only one arm. Of course now I can't find it anywhere. :banghead: I may be mistaken and have the wrong make of vehicle, but don’t think I am. Does this sound familiar to anyone?

Thanks,
Mark

Only to make it fair for everyone else...That was me, with one arm tied behind my back. :-)

No clue.

Possibly Archie Scott Brown? A disabled Scottish driver with a "withered" right arm and no right hand, who drove in F1 before having his entry refused on medical grounds. He was most associated with Lister-Jaguar, though, not Porsche. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/motoring/2752211/Archie-Scott-Brown-A-master-of-the-drift-cut-down-in-his-prime.html

Interesting sideline in the article above is that Bernie Ecclestone bought his former F1 team, Connaught, in 1957.

Have you been briefed on Google yet? Try "Porsche one arm".

Thanks all! Thats him. I tried google but not with that particular word combonation. Following that lead with a search on his name brought up a nifty thread with great pictures.

Enjoy!
