Marie-

Each region runs their own series, and the Zone runs a series too, which will have some overlap with the region's series, as certain events from each region during the year will be specified as "Zone 8" events, so yes, you can run for points in OCR's series championship as well as SDR's, and also compete for the Zone 8 championship. It is a little more difficult to do the Zone 8 series, as it requires traveling to more far-flung region's events (AZ and NV are part of the Zone) and there can be conflicts between regional and zone event dates, but it can be done. Check the Zone 8 calendar and consult the rule book for specifics: http://zone8.pca.org/calendar.php

Hey, that's throwing down the gauntlet, Tom, i.e. winning your class in two PCA regions plus Zone all in one year. Shall we call it "Tweed's Challenge"?

I know Jackie C. won her class in 2008 at both OCR and SDR. But, has anyone ever done all three in one year? :?:

Don, some competitors over the years have indeed won in more-than-one-Region series AND the Zone 8 Championships as well.... I was one of them when I had more time to drive. I do believe that at least Lars Frohm, Paul Young, David Witteried, Neil Heimburge, Bob Bertrand, Bob Holzinger and Mke Furnish are probably among the others...

Marie, your question is a great one and the answer is worth sharing acoss the board....

At the Region level, only a few Zone 8 local regions actually have enough events to term as a "series" -- Orange Coast, San Diego and both Arizona regions. The Grand Prix Region is building a new series with additional dates coming in 2010. Santa Barbara Region is also planning more driving events over the year. However, "series" could be defined to be just two events if a Region were to use that strategy to encourage local driver participation.

The Zone 8 series is pretty much defined -- in a nutshell, Zone series competitors compete in a minimum of 51% (usually either 6 or 7) of the events determined by the Regions themselves as "Zone-events" in the series. The overall intent is to encourage competitions in the "backyards" of Regions all over the Zone and to ultimately be crowned as the Zone 8 Champion of the California, Arizona and Nevada territories.

At the Zone level, we have temporarily waived the "out-of-state" rule while we struggle for an answer to creating fair opportunities for folks who do travel across the Zone and in light of the current economic realities. At present. Las Vegas Region is coming back online with autocross events in 2010 and my hope is that we could have FOUR Zone events betwween Phoenix, Tucson and Las Vegas and thus open up the excitement about traveling and competing.

Hope this helps in its short reponse. We have over 7800 members within this Zone and my job is to work for all of those members and the local Regions in steering these members to the best Porsche experience they can have. It's not too hard a job -- we already have the best Regions in the entire 102,000 member universe of Porsche Club members. In most cases, all I have to do in share an email address and a phone number and my work is done...

Mike, interesting post...thanks for the background and update...sounds, however, like it's been many years since someone did the Zone "trifecta".

It's become easier lately because more regions are running enough events per year to have their own "series." But it has only been in the last few years with Steve Eguina's leadership that OCR has developed their program into a true series to rival SDR's. Most other CA regions in the Zone only have a couple of events a year, at most. I won GS class in both the Zone and SDR in 2004 or so in my '67S, and I don't think that OCR had really ramped up their series yet. I think you would have had to go to AZ to compete in another regional series at that time, other than going up to N. Cal and competing in Zone 7, to do a "trifecta."

Remember, Marie, that if you do SDR and OCR events that are co-designated as Zone 8, then you could already be 1/3rd of the way there to a Zone championship....
