Thanks to everyone who participated in this poll (especially those who avoided extra verbiage :) ). Time Trialers who are participating in the Festival of Speed April 9-11 at Auto Club Speedway will have received an e-mail this morning concerning new rules regarding fuel purchases at the track (Club Racers should receive something soon as well, if they haven't already). The e-mail should be read in its entirety whether you use high octane or pump gas. Action is required if you wish to purchase high octane fuel or save money on 91 at the Speedway.

For those interested in the legal technicalities behind the fuel rule changes, please see http://www.arb.ca.gov/enf/advs/advs397.pdf.

Robert, this language from your email appears to be more restrictive than what's in the CARB memo at the link you provided:

"The Speedway will no longer allow the pumping of high octane gas (which, at the Speedway is either the 98 unleaded NASCAR blend or 110 leaded) into anything other than a “Real Race Car”, defined as a *factory purpose-built race car*, that is *unregistered* (i.e., no license plate and never registered previously) and has a *wide fuel fill opening* (i.e., no funnels allowed, no converted street cars, etc.; standard unleaded fuel fill openings will not work). "

and from the CARB memo:
"“Racing vehicle” is defined as a competition vehicle not used on public highways. Further, if you can drive it to the track, it is not a racing vehicle."

It looks like Cal Speedway is imposing restrictions they feel are prudent to cover themselves.

My car is not registered, is not street legal, and has a fuel cell with a wide opening. CARB seems to think it's a "Racing vechicle." But it's not a factory built race car and was previously a registered street car, so the Speedway disagrees with CARB.

I need 110, which Trackside is apparently not providing. I usually bring enough for a weekend, but more govt regulations are rarely a good thing. Maybe it's time for that 3.6 upgrade so I can keep up with Dan on 91.

Peter, I agree that the Speedway is being more restrictive than they need to be in order to simply comply with state requirements. I'm guessing that they simply don't want the risk of selling non-compliant gas to a car that isn't clearly and easily distinguishable as a "racing vehicle". The fine for a single infraction is $30K, so you can likely understand why they wouldn't want to take chances.

Trackside appears to be very flexible, while still complying with all state laws. Perhaps e-mail them well in advance, explain your situation (that you meet the CARB definition of "racing vehicle") and see if they are willing to help you.
