Had to look and there at the top of the list is the one I pass every day (Ortega Hwy 1.5 mi. e/o 5fwy) this is the most ticketed place in Orange County. They actually put in a tiny paved driveway just for the Motorcycle Officers to sit!

The paved cutouts are becoming more popular and they also "manage" the greens trimming to help obscure even more. There is one on 125N just past Fletcher Pkwy exit also.

Speeding tickets are a great revenue producer for a cash strapped state, more or less a use tax that doesn't show on the budget line items.

I had an idea to create a website that shows in realtime where the "live" speedtraps are. Before you go to work, you tap into my website and find out where they are trying to ambush us that morning! If they pick up and move, drivers can update the website. A co-op site that keeps our money where it belongs. In OUR OWN pockets. 65 -75mph is very common and not unsafe, nor outrageous at all, especially if you're rolling downhill, but it will cost you lots if they pick on YOU.
The good news is that the CHP can't materialize out of no where a la Star Trek. They either have to ambush you with radar, or pace you.
To beat the ambush- just look ahead. I usually spot them 400-600 meters ahead because I know where they hunt. I blast the horn continuously and point at them as I approach to get everyone's attention around me.
To beat the pacing- watch the on ramps! Don't let them drop in behind you. Watch the traffic behind you! Don't let them sneak up behind you.

I'm on the freeway all the time. The spots where I've seen them frequently are:
163 North just as 805 North is coming into it. A motorcycle sits behind the transformer boxes in that little turn out area.
5 South just after the 78 overpass. A motorcycle sits in the shadow caused by the Jefferson St (?) overpass.
** They will also try to pace you on 15 North, while they are cruising in the HOV lanes, mostly hidden behind the concrete barriers.

Places I have seen them more than once or twice:
Under I-805 on Eastbound SR-52 in the morning at the merge of the SB805 to East 52. Often a radar bike behind the shrubbery, mostly watching for Eastbound 52 speeders.
Rancho Santa Fe on the stretch of Paseo Delicias between Del Dios and Via De La Valle. That is a poorly marked stretch of 40 mph and they get a lot of cars going 50+ through there.
At the exit of the SB I-15 carpool lanes onto the main I-15 southbound - watch it coming off the carpool at 80.
They also take the I-5/I-805 bypass South at Carmel Valley Road and pace cars on the main lanes, then pull back in at the merge.
Lomas Santa Fe Drive Westbound about 1/2 mile East of I-5. Sometimes he backs the cruiser up off the road into the shrubbery on the North side of the road on the downhill Westbound stretch, so looking for cars parked on the curb doesn't work.
So far, I have been alert - and lucky!

Are you guys familiar with Trapster?
I don't have a cell phone with the capabilites, but te guys at my last shop were talking about it.
They basically did what Tim was saying, only they use the cell phone "GPS" and an application to alert you of speed traps, cameras etc. in real time. Form your cell phone you can update the database if you spot an ambush too.
Pretty genius sounding, but I never used it.

Ok, here's a new one on me.
I was on 805 south at the 163 overcrossing. I was looking ahead in the shadows of the overpass. As I got closer, I saw a motorcycle 20-30 feet up in the air sitting on the edge of the 163 South to 805 South connector! He was directly above the fast lane with radar.
If he popped someone, he could just drive down onto 805 south and nab them. I foiled another ambush farther south on 805. Cruiser was hiding behind the concrete in the median with the guy standing up and pointing radar at the fast lane. They are getting really sneaky about their attacks on Joe Average. Drive carefully and stay alert my PCA friends, so you can save your money for AX entry fees.

I just did some research on Trapster.com. They report they're getting 20-50,000 hits per day? I guess I was a little too late with my idea, but it WAS original! I got a million of them....
One bad thing about trapster is that it warns about intersection cameras and such. I don't need help with that. I don't run red lights! What I need help with is avoiding a ticket for 72mph in a 65mph zone because I was rolling downhill!

Here's a fail-safe formula:

70-MPH + V1 detector = no tickets.

Subtract the fun factor, and add in the fact that you will arrive at your destination at the same time as driving at 80-MPH, and 70-MPH sounds really good.

Just a thought ...
