I am planning on riving Tuffy to the event...I am guessing a strong Porsche showing will be good and that the kids will enjoy seeing them all...which as I type this I am gussing it goes without saying.

Hey all! Well tomorrow's the day. We have 30 kids ready and willing to learn to be better drivers as they share our roads. We've had a great number of you step and help out as instructors and helpers. It's shaping up to be a great event.

If you find yourself with nothing to do tomorrow, feel free to stop by. We could always use help running the exercises, picking up cones, and the like. We'll be in the South East parking lot at the Q.

Thanks again for everyone who has stepping up to help!

The event was a RESOUNDING success. The student all grew by leaps and bounds, the staff was top notch and everyone wa supportive and pleasent. The only drawback I found was that quite a few students wanted more and since they didn't own Porsches I couldnt encourage the PDS. Though recruiting was not the objective the were ready to keep going.

Well done Mike and everyone!

+1 here. A very worthy effort for the club to undertake, IMHO. Thanks for championing it, Mike! I wish I could have stayed all day--the kids were very refreshing to work with, and soaked up knowledge like little sponges. One of the girls I helped pre-tech had just been in an accident--only a fender-bender, luckily, where no one was hurt, but she couldn't stop in time to keep from plowing into the car in front of her. Thinking that you might be able to keep even one teenager from having such an accident, or something far worse, is strong motivation for me to help out, and a very satisfying feeling. Sorry I couldn't have done more yesterday. I'll definitely be back for the next one. I can't help but think that except for the conflicts on the date w/ other Zone driving events, we would have had more instructors there than students!

When you consider that automobile accidents are the number one cause of death in this age group, accounting for about 40%, it amazes me that there is not a greater effort to reduce them from all corners of society--insurance companies, governmental agencies, etc. Did Qualcomm charge their normal rate for the lot rental? It may be worthwhile to approach the city council next time to give a discount (or free) rate to car clubs putting on this program. Surely they have a stake in it as well, and should be a sponsor. Just a thought...

My opinion of Tire Rack is definitely higher now after learning about their efforts in this area. It's not just good PR, it's what responsible corporate citizenship should be.

Thx,
TT

Yesterday I arrived at the TRSS early to find a bunch of volunteer instructors laughing and ready to spend their entire Saturday helping kids that they didn't even know. (Several students drove down from LA). No one complained even though no instructors even got to drive a car... How do you thank the usual players, the majority being chairs and board members who are probably already doing more than YOU? Their integrity and spirit is their silent reward, but WOW. I'm always blown away by the people in our group. The student and parent evaluations speak volumes for this program. PCASDR pulled it off like they had been doing it for years. These same people are going to turn around and give up another entire weekend and do it all over again for the PDS. What are you doing to give back? If nothing else, please thank the people who do. We need your help. Thanks.

Hmmmmm I dont know Steve. 30 seemed like a nice managable number of students. Good drive time for them. And hey, if we had more istructors we would not have gotten the cardio training we recieved jogging from student car to student car. :roflmao:

Sounds like a good event. Maybe next time try to arrange it so it isn't the week before a TT that is just before a DE which is just before the PDS which is just before a TT. Some of us can't/don't want to donate that many weekends to driving and must choose a few of the many.

Great event, Mike. Thanks for all (and I know there was a lot) your hard work. It's plain to see that you have a heart for these kids. Super time... Great students... Awesome excercises... Great food too (Thanks, Panera!). I'd do it again in a heartbeat. So count me in for next year.

Just a thought : Isn't it awesome to think that, by your actions, you may have actually saved the life, or limb, of a teenager?

Very satisfying day as an instructor. I was really surprised by how little time some of these students had been driving. I had several that were still on their permits. Sure wish something like this were available when I was 15!
