A request

Joyous news and some difficulties. A new PCA member joined us this morning. Nathan my grandson and first grandchild was born at 6:54 this morning.

My oldest daughter had a hives for a couple of days so I took her to the emergency room yesterday to see what was up, (her husband was at work). During checking her in, they noticed her blood pressure was elevated. A subsequent urine test led them to think she had preeclampsia. When we got home, she and her husband headed to UCSD Medical Center in Hillcrest where she had been preparing to have the baby. They confirmed the preeclampsia and since she was at 37 weeks induced labor, 6 hours later he joined us.

Nathan is just 4lbs 10oz, has a small hole in his heart where the spare valve didn’t close. Though both are relatively healthy, our poor daughter has not gotten to seen Nathan beyond a minute or so just after birth. This is pretty hard on her as combined with all the health issues everyone gets to see her son, except her. So. Please. Pray, Chant, dance around a tree…whatever it is that you choose or not choose to do would be greatly appreciated by us all.

I am working on a helmet for him…right now a tennis ball cut in half should be about right.

My thoughts and prayers are for Nathan to overcome this and be a healthy baby boy. I'm sure your daughter and family is strong and he is loved.

We went through a pretty similar thing with our son, and the UCSD Hillcrest hospital was great.

Best wishes for a happy ending like ours....

Thanks everyone. We really apreciate your kindness and encouragement. About 8:30 last night mom and child were finally reunited! The world took a small step closer to "rightness". Here is a picture of the little guy. His head is the length of my index finger, finding racing shoes will be tough. Does Piloti do custom?

Thanks very much!...but hold part of that... daughter #1 had the baby...not daughter #2 who is married to Paul Young :D . Though I am fully willing to make Paul and Ruth honorary grandparents for Nathan!

Mark - My thoughts -- and those of my own family (including 3 boys, all born prematurely)are with you, your daughter and her husband, and Nathan. My oldest son, Jeff, who was a regular AXer (and always about a second faster than I) until going off to dental school this fall, was induced at 36 weeks for the exact same reason. My twins (one of whom drove at one AX last year) were born at 28 weeks, just over 5 lbs between the two of them. My wife and I are psychologists; we have written about these things and do a lot of work with people who've been thru them. We call these kinds of events "reproductive traumas," because they can be so upsetting to the parents (and to the whole extended family!), even when everything turns out fine medically. I have spent a lot of time in hospitals and NICUs, so if there is anything I can do by way of input, advice, suggestions, answering questions, etc., please do not hesitate to call on me (via PM if you prefer).
Best regards
Dave
