Tom Comeau has passed away

Postby Tim Comeau on Fri Oct 25, 2024 10:33 am

It's with great sadness that I report that my dad, Tom, passed away yesterday morning. He was almost 94. He started life in Auburn, Maine, impoverished during the Great Depression of the 1930's, then was "orphaned" at age 5, actually given up to an orphanage because his mother couldn't support him and two of his sisters who were still living at home. The Healy Asylum orphanage, which was run by the Gray Nuns of Quebec, is still there in Lewiston, Maine. French was now his first language. After getting out of the orphanage at age 13, he finished high school and joined the Navy. He rose from the lowest enlisted rank, became an officer, and retired as a Lieutenant Commander in 1979. We're very proud of him. He loved spending time with his Porsche Club friends and made many, many great memories, which we relived on many a night around the fire pit in my backyard. He wanted no funeral service. I'd like to host a gathering of friends at my home in the near future.

Hi Tim,

I’m very sorry to hear about your Dad. He was one of a kind, an excellent Racer and ran the AX events with an iron fist and extreme dedication. He had a tough exterior, but was also warm, friendly and funny. He gave me tips to improve even though we were competing in the same class – a class act. Then, we would kid each other with our results at the end of the event.

Everyone always had the utmost respect for him. After he stopped racing, he emailed me a few times with encouragement, and that he was watching my Autocross results. Men like him are rare, and truly are part of the greatest generation.

My condolences to you and your family. If Martin and I are in town, we would like to come to your gathering to honor him.

Tim, my sincere condolences to you and your family. Tom was a fun to be around, old school and a respected man. He will be deeply missed. I feel honored to have known him and raced against him in his white #43 964 RS America at so many fun Qualcomm Autocross events. - Rest in peace my friend.

Very sorry to hear, Tim. I have many fond memories of your dad all the way back to pre-RS America days when he competently wheeled that Mitsubishi 3000GT around the stadium. He was a fine man with a long life well-lived.

Thank you all for the kind words. My dad autocrossed and time trialed for 15 years straight until he turned 80. Lots of great memories with you guys.

Your Dad was the Safety Chair when I joined the club in Jan 2008. His position and presence at the beginning of each Autocross set the tone for my introduction to both the club and all of those well-executed weekend events. It was an honor to know him and to have him as member of this club. A life well lived, cheers to his bold spirit and great smile.
