2 Points - 2 Seconds? / 6 Points - 6 Seconds?

Postby bryanearll on Sat Dec 18, 2004 10:38 pm

Finally (how about an exciteable boy and his new bleeping toy), it began to look to me by the end of the day that at a certain point "the race" began to be about points spent on the car.

Yep, I'm quite positive that the driver will make the final difference, but the car impacts the final time. The competition is MUCH improved by the classes.

Still, I had the impression that there is some kind of logrythmic progression of points to seconds/tenths of a second chart somewhere. I'm a math geek, if there isn't one there ought to be one.

Im no expert but here's my .02...

1. I think the greatest evidence of how the driver makes the 'final' difference is shown by the 4 second difference in the same car with the same points while driven by Steve G.

2. When adding points to get to the Stock, Improved and modified classes, generally, these people have driven in a stock class for a while and are now improving their car. They are feeling what the car needs to go a bit faster, shocks/springs/sway bars etc.

As an example I run my car in AM and have I think 42 points when I run 9's in the rear and race compound (kumho) tires. I can have up to 54 points in AM, but, I still do well in the class. If I could knock 10 seconds off my time by adding 10 points I'd do it.

So in my opinion there is no correlation between the two simply because there are way too many factors involved.

Good example Dan.

As another example I just added 6 points (to the 4 I already had) on my car last week, putting me in MP, and was only 4 seconds faster than you in your MSS car.

Another good example is the TTOD has been in KS or low point KP cars the last two events, neither have very many points compared to many cars and K is only a medium high class. Thus, looking at points and mods, these cars should be nowhere near the top, yet they are and I doubt many of the higher point cars will be traded in to beat the system in the 'faster' K class car.

In a more mathematical form, I think you are correct on a logrythmic scale. The first few points or mods (tires and alignment) really can help anyones time, the other points have a VERY small effect, but do add up with a tenth here and there.

Using Dan's example of Tim's spec car, same everything with several seconds spread amoung good drivers kinda puts the tenth here and there for mods into perspective. And while Steve is quite good, he has never driven the car before and has never raced a 944 (unlike some of his competition), so he probably is 1-2 seconds slower than Tim would have been in the car. Thus, identical car and condition with reasonably experienced drivers, easily can have 4 seconds based on driver skill and if you look at times, 4 seconds is an eternity and would take LOTS of points and money to overcome.

Not to start the fight again, but to be the best, I agree you need the best equipment and driver, but to be good, you only need a good driver and no amount of money or mods can make you a good driver.

OT: Dan, did you happen to watch the Supercup races on Speed yesterday? In a couple of the races they had a Gulf Liveried Cup Car. Didn't look quite right, but none-the-less there it was.

Sorry to highjack the thread, but seeing Dan's avatar reminded my of this.

Welcome to the world of Time Warner. We have had to get digital for Speed for years, but it is oh so worth it. Digital cable is actually nice, especially if you don't have Tivo as the onscreen guide is very useful. Quit buying tires and get digital cable so I can keep up with you and your Sears Roadhandler tires! :D

Probably the AX at the end of January. I need to see what the new rules are and decide if I want to run KS, get dusted in KP or spend the money and make my car a real KP car

I am thinking the chip (60 hp), 200 lbs more off, and some Hoosiers might improve my times and still keep me well within KP points :D The down side, these mods may start making Steve very happy

Jad,
I am only concerned with your happiness, so if schooling Mr. Andrews makes you happy, then by all means have a ball.

:banghead: Ouch... that is brutal.
That almost hurts as much as actually getting beat in my own car.
I should probably search for a new co-driver with far less talent than Ralph posseses.
Let's see... no talent, slow reflexes (age induced) poor eyesight, (see: age induced) overweight (slows car down) too old to learn new driving style...let's see

Hey, Dan! You would be the perfect choice except for how would I get that old man smell out of the car?
