Some very fast times this weekend as compared to previous events there. The weather, conditions, and dirver skills must have been very nice!

Many thanks to the organizers for another fantastic event.

The conditions were such that most of us were able to post personal-best times at the track but undoubtedly the "star" driver was Martin who still as a "rookie" participated in several races, setting pole and winning one, with top three positions in the others. He also did very well in the Enduro and posted a sub 1:50 in the TT, and all this on basic RA1 Toyo tires! Congratulations Martin, the pro-teams will be after you soon!

Many many thanks to Otto - I would've been much slower without his excellent instruction and inspirational motivation.

Shannon, I am glad I could help. Your progress was impressive and so were your times at the end of the day.

Otto, you are too kind and it's always fun to hang out with you.

Thank you for all your complements and for the encouragement over the weekend. It was one of those rare times where everything clicked. The organizers and volunteers did a fantastic job.

I always hate to see my friends having problems with their cars or not be able to run, but I am glad it was only material damage.

Thanks to Phil and Curt for diagnosing and helping me on Friday with my car problems. I would have been on my way home without them. The people in our club are very generous and helpful to each other. Special thanks to Jack for loaning me parts from his car which allowed me to run all weekend.

The practice starts were a lot of fun. Bill Hartsock, Gary Wimmer and I had a blast chasing each other during the club races. The Enduro was fun too even though I lost a lap behind the pace car. A faster car passed me under Yellow. Bob Brand, Jen and Pete were a great pit crew.

The PCA Club Racing organization awarded me with a Rookie Award and they gave Jackie the Best Novice Award. She deserved it.

See you all in Vegas.

Martin:

You are welcome. I'm glad I could help a little bit. It's the helping each other that makes our club a great group to belong to.

I owe Jae a big thanks for the confidence he gave me about my new noisy rotors, plus that tip on eating bananas. And that tip about not getting worn out.

If you need an excuse to go up to Orange County and autocross, their CDI Jerry Griffin is the best. He rode with me on my last practice session Sunday morning and pulled 2 seconds off my time. Jerry is a great coach and an even greater guy.

More thanks for Bill Hartsock. Three years ago when I started driving he told me to drive on my tires until they were bald. He said if I could learn to drive on slippery tires, then it would be much easier to drive fast on sticky tires. It was a good lesson, and somewhat explains why my car was all over the place last year. Only somewhat.

I can't believe I get to participate in such a fun sport and get all the support our club offers. Thanks to everyone who particpates and makes these events work.

John,

I posted a couple of my movies on youtube, one is from the TT http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lws0AHlAgW0 and the other from the CR1 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iEIgRgyV_LA

I will try compile the best moments from the 1 hour Enduro into a 10 minute movie next.

Martin,

Nice driving, your car accelerates quick and sounds awesome! I think you could have passed Hatsock in three using the banking a bit more. I found fastest laps and ultimately fastest top speed and segment times through turn 1 to turn three are to stay high and come down partially for turn two. My data acquisition showed this to be fastest. stay low yields slower speeds and ultimate slower segment times there.

I also see that you cut off turns 5 and 6 sharply. I have tended to use that only when racing to maintain position and found I can be faster through that segment there but slower at the brake zone for turn 9, always a trade off.

Great video thanks for sharing it, maybe one day soon I will be out there with you!

Thanks Kary.

It is faster staying high, I was impatient and dove to early to try passing Bill on the inside.

I think that I could make good use of a data aquisition system and better brakes.

It is hard to keep the car high as long as possible in turn 1 and 2. That pescky wall keeps catching my eye as well as the marbles :)

Noticed under braking you had some good wiggle going on there, do you have a limited slip, if so what is the ramp up and ramp down percentages? When I got mine the high speed braking areas became much easier as the car stays in a straight line.

You are studying my driving way too closely. That is correct, I am not using an adjustable Limited Slip, but a Guard Transmission Torque-Biasing differential.

I use the same diff as Martin and my car gets a bit twitchy under high speed heavy braking (aka turn 3). I keep hearing that the clutch LSD helps keep the car straight in braking, where the torgue-biasing diff's do nothing. I've often wondered how much of a difference it makes. Does the clutch LSD really increase your braking potential or does it just make the same braking less hair raising.

I have a LSD in my 993. The year before I put it in the car would squiggle all over during braking into turn 3 at Fontana. After putting the LSD in it's more like it's on rails going into turn 3. Big confidence builder too when the car is more stable and you don't have to fight it to keep going straight under heavy braking. :D

I concur with David as we have the same LSD in the car. To answer the question about better brake effecacy I do not know definitively. But, if a car is waggling all over the place while braking it is essentially sliding laterally to the direction you are braking. There is limited contact patch for the tire and the same for adhesion. So if some of the adhesion is used to deal with the waggle and the rest for the braking then I would have to believe that if the car brakes in a straight line without a waggle it is capable of braking faster becuase all adhesion is directed at braking, not braking and waggling. Sorry for the stupid term waggle but it seems to work here :)
