If you 'only AX'

Postby 4est on Tue Jun 16, 2009 12:01 pm

If you only AX and had thought about DE, consider this:

A little over twice the price of an AX, with 100 minutes of driving in twenty minute blocks without having to wait in a cue line between laps. Even if you are new to DE and this track, you could at least do 1:30 laps, and would end up with 66 laps (very simple math). You would get about 13 laps per session, which in itself would equal a whole AX. Re-read some of the posts that include distances covered. I got over 80 laps myself.

With enough participation we might be able to run this venue several times a year. You would see the edge of the slippery slope because you would never want to 'only AX' again.

Outstanding driving event. Safe, fun, challenging. Awesome learning format. I hope every AX'er gets excited about this driving opportunity and we do it often. Hats off to the DE guys for hitting a homerun!

And to add on to 4est's comments - the DE let's you follow a car, see their line, and see what happens when comparing it to your's....and if you do something well, or not so well, you see it verified as you either gain or not gain on the other car. A great educational tool. Gee - I get it now, that's why it's called Driver Education!

Also - Thank you Bussalacchi's for cooking lunch! One of the best cheeseburgers I've had in a long time!

A huge thanks to Carl, Peter and Martin for making this happen. It was my first time on an actual track and I had a blast. I'd like to thank Carl and Dan for letting me play follow the leader with them, and everyone in yellow who let us stay together as a group--very appreciated!

The best part was I *finally* got Mona in the car and took her around the track at lunch time. I explained what I was doing and where to look and after a couple laps she had a big grin. Uh oh, what have I done? :)

It was a blast, my thanks go out as well. Left at 5:45 to head home and the "Corona Crunch" wasn't too bad.

I was running in White group with my Targa, and got a 1:23.36 as my best.

It looks like my best was a 1:20.3 at the end of the day if I am reading the G2X files correctly

Sounds about right, Greg. I ran 1:23's and 1:22's in my car, and you're a bit more set up than me in IP/II.

Looks like you're gettin' that "engine in the wrong place" car down very quickly. Nice. 8)

That was a great day. Hat's off to all the volunteers who made it happen. Thanks guys, and gals.

I think a couple events like this a year would be great; at least 2 events. Maybe more?

Excellent day guys and gals. I nearly burned a tank of gas on the track. Still a little sore though from clubracer Jackie hugging my rear bumper  . All the boys from GPX region had fun as well. See ya next time.

The whole event went so well, and the track is sooo much more fun than anything we can set up at the Q, perhaps we should run all our DE's at Fontucky.
Sure, it's a hassle to drive 180 miles, and some of the cars that are normally driven to the Q (mine, for example) must be trailered, but the facility is worlds better, and no broken windshields all day!
Even the food is better than the Q (thanks, Isabella :D )

I could see having at least one event per year at the Q to "set the hook" in new participants who aren't ready to travel/test the waters in an unfamiliar environment/venue, but the rest of the year........

I guess the real question is "How much more work is it for our fearless leaders to have DE's away?"
"The boys" have worked very hard for our collective fun, I don't want to add to that, we owe them big time as it is.
Next time at the track, volunteer to adjust their vanity mirror or radio station to show you appreciate all they do. :beerchug:

Another learning tool about the DEs: Don't spend so much time looking in your mirrors, it will cost you and it's a chance to get more comfortable in traffic...If you haven't done it, you are wasting some valuable seat time...

I believe the DE chairs said this event was possible because the track rental is so much cheaper on a weekday. I wonder if future DE's at this track would have to also be on a weekday to keep the cost reasonable.

I had a great time in learning this track and will attend DE's in Fontana if we have more.

The track was easy on tires vs. the Qualcom surface. This made the event cheaper to run than a at Qualcom by at least $50-$80 in tire wear, maybe $100 for some cars.

I agree there should still be at least one DE at Qualcom to get drivers intimidated by a track for their first DE experience.

Or have a separate run session at a Qualcom DE that would be a "Mini DE Driving Clinic" for drivers with only autocross experience. Separate registration and flyer for this 20 car limit clinic run group. This would include some on-site "classroom" time as well. We need to get autocross drivers comfortable driving in traffic.

The work is about the same, but the high track fees create a lot of sweat for a break-even number. Of course, having a sold out event gives us confidence to do it again. We also don't want to cut into the Time Trial attendance or compete directly with other region DE's and CFoS. We are carefully considering doing 2 DE's outside of the Q if we can balance all of these factors.
Thanks for the great input. :beerchug:

I agree too.....and for drivers considering this adventure - Sure, the first time doing this is a bit nervous as it is new... but having done this driving a bit now I find I am way more comfortable on the track than I am MANY times on the feeway with the many unpredictable, inexperienced, inconsiderate, texting drivers.

Come to think of it, I don't recall ever swearing at a driver on the track. Well, maybe when Jackie Corwin has passed me for the umteenth time! :D
