Well, for that range of years, he might as well get a Boxster S, as it isn't that much more money (but it IS more power, a 6-speed, and bigger brakes). From the '00 to the '04, there were a lot of incremental improvements to the interior (I still covet the '03-'04 glove box), and starting with '03, there was a heated glass rear window (although I don't like the roof shape quite as much as the older design).
The most important thing is to find a car that has a reasonable amount of mileage (around 40-50k) so that you know any issues have been weeded out, and you want a seller who has all the service records and who changed the oil every 5k miles (instead of the factory specified 15k miles). Might as well get a good mechanic to inspect it, too. Also, running the VIN on CarFax is a good way to get of sense of whether the car has had any accidents, etc.
First get him into the car, and then sign him up for the PDS.
