+1 here. A very worthy effort for the club to undertake, IMHO. Thanks for championing it, Mike! I wish I could have stayed all day--the kids were very refreshing to work with, and soaked up knowledge like little sponges. One of the girls I helped pre-tech had just been in an accident--only a fender-bender, luckily, where no one was hurt, but she couldn't stop in time to keep from plowing into the car in front of her. Thinking that you might be able to keep even one teenager from having such an accident, or something far worse, is strong motivation for me to help out, and a very satisfying feeling. Sorry I couldn't have done more yesterday. I'll definitely be back for the next one. I can't help but think that except for the conflicts on the date w/ other Zone driving events, we would have had more instructors there than students!
When you consider that automobile accidents are the number one cause of death in this age group, accounting for about 40%, it amazes me that there is not a greater effort to reduce them from all corners of society--insurance companies, governmental agencies, etc. Did Qualcomm charge their normal rate for the lot rental? It may be worthwhile to approach the city council next time to give a discount (or free) rate to car clubs putting on this program. Surely they have a stake in it as well, and should be a sponsor. Just a thought...
My opinion of Tire Rack is definitely higher now after learning about their efforts in this area. It's not just good PR, it's what responsible corporate citizenship should be.
Thx,
