Toyo RA1?

I agree with Tim on Chapman. I bought 4 each 225/50R15 on 11/04 shaved, shipped, no tax for $140 each, with quick delivery.

Tim,

I have read many people say that the Toyo's seem to perform similarly shaven vs shaving them yourself by running them at a couple events. As long as we don't mind losing peak performance for a couple of events, unshaven seems to give a couple of days of free tires. Can you comment on that (unconfirmed) belief?

Yes, more tread equals longer life. But I don't want to be losing races while I wear my tires down to the "sweet spot" where they are competitive with the guy next to me...... who has been beating me up till then with his shaved tires........
'sup to you. :)
We shave them for peak performance out of the box.

Something else to consider, and a very contenteous idea:

many drivers would swear that shaved tires can last longer than not shaved, due to the difference in heat-cycling between fat vs. thin tread. More than one driver in this club mentioned to me that shaved tires last every bit as long ... if not longer ... than full-tread tires. :?

I'll be experimenting with this. 8) I have shaved tires, non-heat cycled. We'll see where I am near the end of the summer, and leaning toward the end of the season with respect to needing a new set by Pahrump  , or chancing it on the current ones. Should be interesting.

Well Guys and Gals, after much leg work and many phone calls I have completed my journey only to find that no one really calls back. Of the 5 places I tried, two of which you guys mentioned in this thread, only one called me back which resulted in the pricing I described above which did not include shipping nor CA tax.

As such, I am going to be unable to get us a group buy unless someone calls back (eventually) next week. I wanted to make sure I got back you all of you so you could make other arrangements if you need tires for the Speedway as Jad suggested.

I will keep you posted if any of the distributors actually call back, but unfortnuately it is the nature of the business at times.

more on tires

Postby Jim Knoke on Sat Feb 26, 2005 3:13 pm

Thanks for trying, Kary. Sounds like the best thing for us to do may be to deal with either www.bmwwheels.com or www.frisbyracetire.com as individuals.

Make sure you order your Toyo RA1' quick, because it did take 2 weeks for me to get them.

My Toyo's are being installed as I type; 2 x 235 45t R 17 an 2 x 255 40 R 17 for $805 out the door including mounting, tax etc at Discount Tire. The front cost $20 more than the rears.

Note: these are all special order sizes and cost a bit more.

Had I had a pickup or some other way of hauling tires I could have brough some back for you guys.

I think Chapman is going to be at the Speed Fest. I asked the tech at the truck and he said they had been "invited" but was unsure about their attendance. Call Brian to be sure. If there are going to be there you can save shipping and probably a little on mounting ($48 to mount all 4, don't know anyone in town that mounts + balances for $12 ea.).

Import Tire downtown will. I usually pay $10 each for loose tires mounted and balanced.

Thanks for trying on the group buy, Kary. I guess I'll try some Kumho 710s instead.

Thanks Kary - Maybe you can set something up for the rest of the year.

Chapman came through - 235/40/17 and 255/40/17 @ $159ea. Delivered tax free in 2 days.

If you want them for Speedfest, Chapman's will ship in 2 days.
