Driver Dinner?

A place to hang out and discuss all things Porsche.

Postby John Straub on Wed Sep 05, 2007 12:00 pm

As Tom says...the Installation Dinner really started out as a year end party to thank all the hard work of all the volunteers and to welcome the new workers. The driving event awards were a large part of our old dinners for years and years, because the drivers were a huge part of the members doing the work...then the charity thing started to come in the last few years...and only having so much time...the driving awards got pushed out. :(

Boy, Katina busted my chops last night at the board meeting on my "Chatity" comment...well let me also add that another reason the driving event awards got squeezed out ,is because our Region has gotten soooo big and has soooo many Chairs now that get thanked as well as the new ones coming in that it take way more time than before. The Installation Dinner has just morphed into something different.

  Perhaps ... yet another reason to consider a driver's event, seperate from the time limitations of the already-busy Installation Dinner? Just a thought .... 8)

... and this has changed ... how?

I'd like to thank the Board for unanimous approval of the Drivers Dinner. The event will be held on February 9th 2008. There will be more details to follow both on the forum and in the Witness. Several people did a lot of work in a short time to be able to make a proper presentation to the board and get their approval. Jennifer, Jackie, Leigh, Brian, Ron, Dan and of course Gary were key players. Thank You all and I apologize for anyone I missed.

If you haven't already made plans to attend the Installation dinner please consider attending. The dinner is January 12th and will be a great event to network with your fellow Porsche enthusiasts. This dinner is to recognize all of the people who make all that we do as a club possible. The board, the volunteers, event chairs and membership in general contribute to make this club very special. Come and celebrate all of our accomplishments for 2007. This is our 50th year as the San Diego Region and we had a Parade here as well this year. We have a lot to celebrate. I hope to see you there.

Thanks to the "Driver Dinner Planning Committee" and the Board for all the efforts to bring us a venue to really develop those excuses on why we didn't drive faster in 2007. As in the past, this should be a very popular event not to be missed by anyone with bad tires and suspension problems.

I'd like to thank John for clearing up his statement...

"then the charity thing started to come in the last few years...and only having so much time...the driving awards got pushed out."

I certainly didn't want to be the charity gal responsible for pushing out the drving awards. ;-)

Oh no John you did it again. "Hot auction items." I think Katrina will tell you that none of the items for auction are stolen. Or at least none she knows of.

She does a great job with the charity stuff. It just makes this club better and more community focused. It's nice that we give back so much to those in need.

I would first like to thank Ted and the board for voting the DD into reality. I don't think it will compete with the Installation Dinner; instead,it will compliment it. As expressed, there's too much going on at the ID to give a very important sector, the drivers, their due.

Thanks to all those who took part in this grassroots effort. I am amazed by the people in this club, the amount of effort put into these things is incredible. Not just this Driver Dinner, but, the hard work of volunteers make every event possible.

Nice Job All!!

I would like to point out that the Board was unanimously in favor of the Drivers' Dinner at the Board meeting on Wednesday.

I think there were some perceptions that some of the Board were previously opposed to a separate dinner, but there sure wasn't any resistance to the proposal on Wednesday. There were some questions, just clarifying expenses and fees, but once those were answered, the proposed dinner passed quickly (and unanimously). I think that if there were any objections before, it was probably due to this issue being raised very late in the year, and without any prior planning/budgeting being done - once the planning occurred, and a reasonable budget was presented - voila - approval.

Sometimes I get the impression on the Forum that there is a perception of some kind of "us vs. them" attitude of Board members, or some kind of "inner circle" clique that is in it for the power (What power? :? ). Anyone who thinks the Board members are in it for some kind of power trip needs to run for the Board (or just attend some Board meetings - they are open to all SDR members) - I think you would come away with quite a different perception.

I look forward to attending both dinners, and I applaud both the team that quickly put together a coherent plan for the Drivers' Dinner and the Board for swift approval. :D
