Inspection for Purchase for Boxster

Postby nameboy on Tue Jan 10, 2006 5:52 pm

Hi,
I'm looking at used Boxsters, 2000-2003. Are there any years to avoid or to value more highly, other than the obvious?
When I find one I like, where would you recommend I take it, in the San Diego area, for inspection?
Anything in particular/unusual/specific to have the mechanic check?
Thanks in advance.
thx,
tj

Take it to a place who has a Porsche system tester II so they can read the history on the car and any faults it may have.

The number of small failures on the Boxsters is too numerous to go over here (things like door cables/top pieces/top related switches/blah blah/

if you are looking for a Boxster to join the "Spec Racing" you will need to buy a 1997-1999. The Spec Class requires a 2.5 liter engine.

My Boxster did have a few minor problems over the years: the roof top switch, roof leaks, CV join, clutch etc. The only major problem so far: I had to replace the gearbox at 42k miles and now the car has 97k miles.

Boxsters at least in my experience are overall very solid cars.

Personally I like cars which come with its complete maintenance history and I would also recommend to get the car inspected by Dieter's, Mind Over Motorsports or Black Forest before you make a purchase.

I have a 2002 Boxster S, and have had no problems with it, major or minor. :burnout:

I have heard that the 97-98 Boxsters had some engine problems and are best avoided, but if you're looking for 2000-2003, you should be fine.
