My neighbor is looking to buy a used boxster, with a budget of under $20k. From my brief looking, there are a lot of 97-99 models, some with fairly low miles on them. I was wondering if any of you had any pointers, things to look for, etc.

You might want to look at Pete's Boxster Board (http://www.ppbb.com/board/986board.htm). There are a lot of comments about the earlier Boxsters. I think there were some reliability issues with the first year (1997) or so, but I think by now all the "teething" problems ought to be over.

There is a Boxster problems page that might be of interest:

Two recent publications include extensive info on purchasing used Boxsters. Excellence (September 2004) and 911 & Porsche (Number 122) provides a nine-page Boxster guide.

Alan:

If he could lift his budget to $23k he could by mine before I turn it in to the leasing company at the end of Sept. It is a 1999 with black/tan (full leather) 58k miles, paint is flawless, all service at Pioneer, sport package, H&R springs and corner balance, EVO custom intake, 'S' exhaust, drilled rotors, updated shifter, '04 headlights and tail lights, plus plus. I havent even tried to sell it as I have been having enough problems finding a new one. But if he wants a really clean boxster, I would rather have it stay within the club than give it to Chase. Anyway, if he wants to see it, have him call me at 858-456-4933.

Deniis: Thank you, I've orderded that issue of 911 & Porsche and will probably grab the Excellence also.

David: I'll let him know, getting a good example from someone local is always so much better than getting it from a random person.

Kim: Thanks for the advice.
