The hunt begins...

OK, it's finally time to start looking for motors. I have to keep it the stock displacement because I just cannot afford to race in GT3S/R4. That is just not an option at this point.

Here are my options as I see them:

1) Buy a brand new motor direct from Porsche, giving my old 3.2 back as a core.

2) Buy a brand new motor direct from Porsche. But keep my old 3.2, rebuild it and have it on hand for a spare.

3) Buy a used motor for less than $3K, rebuild it and my stock 3.2. Then swap them out as necessary.

4) Buy a used air cooled 3.2L and turn the waterpumper into a "real" Porsche. (not even sure this is possible)

Anything I have not considered? Thoughts? Opinions? Hair-brained ideas? Anything that keeps my out of GT/R4 will be considered.

With the exception of a whole new car I think you have it covered. How much does it cost to rebuild an engine for your car? Having a spare engine might be a good idea but by keeping it stock it would seem that it should be pretty reliable. You can play back and forth with do I go with one new factory engine for reliability or have 2 rebuilt engines so I can change one out if it breaks. Good luck with your choice and keep us up to date with your progress.

What I did in a similar situation is buy a used motor and stick it in. It should run fine for a long time, which gives you plenty of time to carefully rebuild your engine. Then, you can stick yours back in when you are confident it is the better motor or when the 'new' one has a problem. Why rebuild a supposedly perfectly good motor that you are buying?
