A few months ago, I saw a reference online to a dvd that was a compilation of 50 years of cockpit footage from race cars. I even found where to buy it online, but my memory has let me down. Has anybody seen this, or know the real title?

Do you mean 50 years of Formula One? (GP)

There is a DVD with F1 footage from different drivers and era. 1950's to the present.
It is called "50 years of Formula 1 On-Board".
It has footage from:
Fangio, Moss, Stewart, Senna and Schumi.
It is great footage and has 5.1 sound so it is great on a big screen and with surround.

I own a copy and would be glad to loan to anyone as long as I get it back wihin a reasonable amount of time.
