cheap 928

I was at the Pomona swap meet this morning and a guy had the following sign on his 928

"1979 Porsche 928 V/8 5-speed runs & drives great 100k miles in storage 9 years just spent over $1,500 on new parts. fuel pump. smog pump. timing belt. fan belts- radiator hoses top end gaskets & seals/ have receipt. $3,400 (909) 499-3336"

The car looked like it had probably been stored outside for at least some of that 9 years as the interior was in poor condition by the windows. Drivers door looked repainted and there was a dent on the rear fender. I also noticed that the red temporary registration sticker had expired two weeks ago. Other than that, there was a nice 912 that seemed reasonably priced... but I better wait a while before I bring home another toy... cheers!

Don't even think about going there
The worst thing you can have for a 928 (or probably any Porsche) is storage. These cars need to be driven.
The $3400 is too much for that car and is just the start of more troubles.
The 928 is a great car and can be a good Porsche bargain, but that one is not.

912's can bite you in the bottom, if you're not careful. Many parts are no longer in production, and vital ones - like heads, cranks, cases, etc. - are hard to find, very expensive, and often too "over-worked" to be used again.

I'd caution anyone thinking of getting a 912 to do lots, and lots of homework. Be picky. And, thanks to recent popularity of the model, don't be alarmed if the asking price for a "good to excellent" unit goes for $12K to $15K. Fanatics with "perfect examples" might ask $20K

On the flip side: they are one of the best cars Porsche ever built. Ever. Period. (Not that I'm biased, you understand.....)
