914 six conversion in 'A' or 'H' class

914s have two distinct classes, 'A' for 4 cylinders and 'H' for 6 cylinders.

Suppose one was to take a 914 1.7L four cylinder car and stick a six cylinder motor into it.

Does one simply take extra horsepower points but remain in the 'A' classification

or

does changing from a four to a six switch you from 'A' to 'H', and then take additional horsepower points from there?

The way I see it, 'A' class cars up through AI have four cylinders and no more. More cylinders means a change to 'H' as a baseline.

Comments?

Mark:

The rules allow you to choose from two different
paths - basing it on a 914, or on a 914-6.

If you 'convert' to a 914-6, and start in HSS,
don't forget the six points for the gearbox -
the ratios are different between 914 and 914-6.
The car would be HS or higher, depending on other
modifications to the car.

You could take the points for increased power
over a 914-4 (rules section III-L - engine swaps).
The car would likely end up in AP or AI.

Either of these assume a stock 914-6 engine (110hp).
If you have a different engine, you either need
to take points (or more points) for increased
power (III-L again), or various other points
for modifications (displacement, heads, cams, etc.).

Paul is correct again... Hey, Paul how about adding Rules chair to your resume?
Not like you don't have enough on your plate as it is?

But to answer Mark's second question, A-street stock to AI is not a 4-cylinder class.
There is not 4 or 6-cylinder designation. A '74 914 2.0L is 95HP and a 914/6 is 110HP. Take the 8-points for engine swap HP points and you are at the top of AS.

Do all of the 914-6 conversion (engine, gears, brakes) and you are HSS.

Thanks for the replies!

So, by ignoring the base class (1.7/1.8 four = A, 2.0 four = C or 2.0 six = H) for the transplanted engine:

I can take my '75 1.8 which starts out in AS/S and put in a 2.0 four and take 8 points for additional horsepower, or 4 points for additional displacement? Both of which put me into A/S, not CS/S?

Well, it's already on my resume. I was Z8 Rules
chair twice, for several years each. They just
fired me from the PCR committee after 10+ years.
For some twisted reason, I seem to get involved
with rules. :?

BTW, sure appreciate your help at SMMP. Snickers
made it through the weak-end, and even carried
John Magnuson home while we trailered his broken
car.

Your time was ggreat - hate to imagine what
un-blistered slicks would have done for you!

Paul.

Mark:

The power option makes the most sense, because with the displacement route you also need to take points
for the cylinder heads, which are different, plus the fuel system (different from 914 1.8L to 2.0L).
That's going to end up being a 17 point car.

Another approach is to update your 1.8 to a 2.0 liter 914, as spelled out in the rules section V.
If done right (which is easy), you will end up with essentially a 914 2.0 liter, and run in CSS.

Paul.

Sorry to be a pest...

So it IS technically legal to run in AS with a 2.0 using the horsepower upgrade? Wouldn't that make 1.7/1.8 drivers a little upset?

What I am getting at is: Does allowing a technically 'C' motor into 'A' class under the horsepower increase clause (section 3L) violate the spirit of the class? If so, doesn't it follow that allowing an 'H' motor in the 'A'/'C' classes is the same problem?

So if I put a 1.7 four in my 914/6 can I subtract 50 points? Just kidding.

Mark,
You take the stock everything AS/S car and put a 2.0L motor in it for 8-points and I'll take the 1.8L car and run sway bars, springs/torsion bars, and 225-50 RA-1's on 16x7 in. 951 wheels tucked under 916 flares all for the same 8-points...
Still think your car has an unfair advantage?

Rules can't cover every possible modification option for every car but we try to make things as fair as possible.

So much for running my 912 90hp car in AS/S or AS....against a 914-6  Guess that's why it's distinguished as the "***" class.
