Come, come, now. 3rd place against the pee-wee guys is a great finish. I was really pleased with our effort and what a blast we had! We did it all correctly and efficiently but just couldn't match the performance advantage gained by the littler guys weight. Jad qual'd for us and did a great job, putting us third, after the weight index handicapping.
I would start for our team and run the first 50 laps. As I looked around me on the grid, I could see the guy on pole, directly in front of me, was as big as me or bigger (See the karting website pics). His was the forward most kart, placed on the left side of the track, but the first turn was to the right. The kid in second was SMALL!..and forward on my right. I figured if I swept right immediately at the start, I could defend from 4th place attacking and at the same time have a good chance of getting on the bumper of second place and following him into the first turn, thus "freight- training" the poor guy on pole. It worked perfectly and I gained a position for our team immediately. THAT glory was short lived! By the second turn, a couple of the pee-wees came out of nowhere,( no mirrors!) completely surprising me, and one or two got by. Us heavier guys just can't match the turn to turn burst of accelleration possible from these little tikes!
So, at the end of the first lap we were back in third again. I cranked out the best laps I could, trying different lines and techniques to get my lap times lower, while working slower traffic and passing at the most efficient places I could. The best lap for me was a 33.28.
After 50 laps, we made a great driver change and Jad started throwing down some even faster laps, setting his best at 32.869, with only two laps to go. Jad's dad, Jim, was helping with pits-to-driver communications, which was really helpful and appreciated. We held third place for the entire race, though we gave away a couple laps to the pee-wees. Martin also had a good first run with Chris and I believe he learned enough about this event to be very competitive at the next one. I thought we all did a fine job of representing local PCA driving talent and we're looking forward to the next event....
a 200 lap enduro, which will probably require 3 or more drivers! It just means more fun with PCA driving friends!
...and you know, I never did see any Ferrari colors....
