Source for Toyos

Postby David J Marguglio on Mon Dec 11, 2006 12:28 pm

I just tried Brian at Chapman and found that a) he is no longer there and, b) Chapman no longer sells Toyos. Does anyone know a source for shaved RA1's???

Thanks.

David,

Try topless Performance in AZ. You can get their number on the POC website. What ever happened to your new car you were building?

Thanks, Mike. I put a call in to Topless and left a message; hopefully they will come through.

That's too bad :( , Brian @ Chapman was the best source for Toyo's.

I did some research for you, since I am going to be competing in KI next year and I found the perfect replacement for your Toyo's.

Too funny, Martin!

David, I will also be in KI next year, so I won't be needing this secret alternate source for Toyos:

According to the 944spec website, Brian is now an independent Toyo dealer, here's his number.

Toyo has a new tire - R888 coming. Same compound with a little less tread pattern. Also, the treadware rating is now 100, so you can take 2 less points and run a faster tire.

That happened really fast. I bought a set of shaved Toyo's from Chapman last month. The emails didn't come from Brian though. They still have a link at the bottom of their website for Toyo tires. Interesting!!!! I had heard that Brian left, I guess we'll have to buy from him. I have the same number John listed for Brian.

The RA-1 has been rated 100 for at least a year now.

Weird, I was just in the Toyo Tire display at SEMA and the size they were showing of the RA-1 was rated 40. Perhaps they did not change all of them?

Must have been some older tires. I found this quote on the web:

NOTE: Late production Proxes RA1s will have a UTQG Treadwear Rating of 100. Older Production Proxes RA1s will have UTQG Treadwear Ratings of either 50 or 40, depending on the tyre size. The Proxes RA1 was re-tested, and due to changes with the UTQG testing procedures, Proxes RA1s will now have a UTQG Treadwear Rating of 100. There has been no change of tread compound for the Proxes RA1.

My experience matches Kris. My Toyos use to all be 50's, but the last couple sets have all been 100's.

If they were just 101's

Thanks to TimCom, I got found Brian on his new cell #. Brian is still a great guy, but after hearing Toyos new prices, I will not be buying RA's again. What the hell is Toyo thinking? They have had 2 price increases in the last 12 months and are now priced 20-25% OVER Hoosiers and Kumho. My 275/18's now cost $295!!!

The reason I began using Toyos several years ago was that they were just a bit slower, lasted a longer, and were cheaper than the competition. So now that they have priced themselves out of the market, I wonder who is going to pay more money to go slower???

Sorry Toyo, my money will now go to Kumho.

That's strange, Dave, because my 944 spec size 225/50/15 are still at $128 each. Your 944 is up for sale again.

Locally Dave Turner also sells Toyos (I got a set of 205/50/15s for $120 ea and there's no shipping.)

I don't know about shaving, tho.

Also, when I took the tires to Evans Tire in Lemon Grove for mounting, the guy said that though they are not allowed to advertise it, they can get RA1s in about 2 days. No idea about pricing, but I may go that route next time I have to replace.
