Toyo RA1's

Postby Rsylvestri on Mon Feb 05, 2007 6:59 am

I was wondering if any member had Bryan Shackelford's contact info as I'm looking for a set of Toyo's for my car. He used to be at BMW wheels but I remember reading he had left and was working some where different.
He was great to work with and had good pricing / service.
Thanks, Rick

Toyo RA-1

Postby GeorgeB on Wed Feb 07, 2007 5:27 pm

Rick, I did some checking last week, both online and called a couple sources but I went with the wheelstore ( see below). About 20 bucks a tire less than anyone else I found. Let them know your with the porsche club. I pick my tires up tommorrow. They shave and mount.

Hey George!

Thanks for the info, I did talk to Joe @ The Wheelstore. I just ordered a set of Hankook's from www.frisbyracetires.com. They had some discontinued DOT 50's Z-211's 225 & 285's for my car for around 600.00 for the set. Peter C. had some on his 993 and was very happy with the performance @ Willow, he said they were on sale so I bought a set.

To bad you couldn't make Willow Springs, you would have loved turn 8-9 after a few pucker moments  I won't make Streets this month but just signed up for the Speed festival.
Hope to see you there Bud :)

Driving to Willow Springs on RA1's

Postby GeorgeB on Fri Feb 09, 2007 4:39 pm

Got my RA1's. I like the sidewalls. Seem pretty sticky for 100 UTQ's.

Should I be ok driving on these up and back to Willow Springs? I don't imagine the wear will be that bad. The tire should last half as long as my Dunlop 8000's with a UTQ of 200. But just wondering.

RA1's

Postby Peter on Fri Feb 09, 2007 5:48 pm

I've driven up/back to Willow Springs several times on RA1's without problems. A new set easily lasts through a 2 day TT. I went last weekend on a set of Hankooks that were probably softer. The tires are probably 30 to 50% gone after a trip. I haven't tried to make a second trip on a used set yet.

My only concern is a damaged tire due to off-track excursions but I've been in the dirt several times and haven't flattened one yet.

Thanks for the input Peter, how would you compare the RA-1's with the Z2-11's on grip / performance? Frisby tire said they have alot of rear sets left in 18"s, I don't know about the stock in 17"s.

Mine won't be used for any travel (except the Q events) just TT's, DE's and maybe an occasional AX.
It will be interesting to see how the Hankooks wear/heat cycle before the get greasy on the track.

George, hope to see you at a TT soon, they relaxed the requirements in SS & S classes. Just need the stock three point and a fire ext. I think you'll like the RA-1's, maybe by 2-3 seconds ;)

2 to 3 seconds sounds good to me- almost

Postby GeorgeB on Sun Feb 11, 2007 9:17 am

Rick,

Yep, thats what I heard, a drivers 2 to 3 seconds faster. I definetly need to be at least 3 seconds faster since last year I noticed the NS winner was usually 3 to 4 seconds faster than me in NSS on Dunlop 8000's. I'm hoping I'll benefit more than the average driver from grip since my 4-spd often leaves me bogged down in 2nd gear coming out of corners at the AX, sitting there with my foot on the floor, engine spinning in the high 2000's with about 150 Hp, waiting for the engine speed to get to 3200 were the car really starts pulling hard. So hopefully I will have enough added speed in these slow turns that will allow the car to be in its power band in second gear.
Can you feeel it!

Rick, I'm not a consistent enough driver to compare performance/grip of the Hankooks vs. Toyos. I bought the Hankooks because they were cheap DOT track tires and was really pleased with their performance last weekend. I expected to be less than satisfied, but I ran them at the same hot pressures I've been running the RA-1's and the only issues were driver-induced. I've also been pleased with RA-1's. I think my car is capable of a lot more speed than I've demonstrated so far, so either tire works for me.
