Kumho ECSTA MXs at Fontana TT

Postby Zulu993 on Fri Feb 23, 2007 11:15 pm

Does anyone have any experience with these tires at Fontana (or anywhere else) and how well do they hold up? Would a new set get me through the three days?

I know this is a RA-1 biased group but just checking.

Thanks

I can't talk about Fontana, but at AX's these tires get very unpredictable after 4 or 5 laps.

I ran MXs on my 964 C4 for a couple of seasons of ax and tt and they held up very well. They can get a bit greasy toward the end of a session on hot days but not bad. I ran one set for most of a season so I would think a set would last for the three days with no problem.

I have run MX's on several cars in SS class 87 Carrera, 993, 964, 944...
They are a good tire and last quite a long time.
The greasy when hot issue can be lessened by using nitrogen or monitoring tire pressures more closely. They get loose because they heat up a lot and the pressure gets too high.
Monitor the pressure and you will be OK.

I used MX's as a track tire a while back and found them to be a good tire. I now use them for the street, and V710's on track. If you follow Steve's advice they'll be good and consistent throughout the run session. Stay away from the 712's, those tires suck major.

Not sure how you got the impression this is a Toyo biased club. But you'll find that people run just about everything on the big tracks; Toyo's, Hoosier's, Yokohama's, Kumho's, Nitto's, Pirelli's, Michelin's, etc., etc., And except for maybe one or two people there is very little loyalty. People here want the fastest tire on their car, and will switch brands mid-season if that's what it takes.

I think the perceived RA-1 bias is because these are the best "My first R-rated tire" and used by so many.

They will tolerate high heat, imperfect alignment/pressure/driving better than any other r-rated tire IMHO. Great for those who just want as many consistent fast laps as possible without fiddling with the car every two seconds.

But to prove Mike's point I'll be running RA-1's and V-Racers... another set of wheels and we'd have a set of slicks too...
Sticky tires are like a drug... once you've taken the leap you are always looking for more grip.
Good thing it's all legal... 8)

Thanks for all the advice. I use to run RA-1's and think they're a great tire that as Steve says are pretty predictable and tolerant of changing track conditions. I was just looking for a possible alternate given the fact that the Toyo's are getting expensive.
