Is there any chance we can rent a street sweeper or vaccuum for our next autocross? I would assume the cost is relatively low, and it would sure be nice to clean the junk off with the correct tools, instead of using our $10,000-$150,000+ automobiles to do it (inefficiently).

Even if all we did was have it run the track after throwing but before roping it would be a big help.

10-150K? Between purchase price, slave labor, and selling excess parts on eBay my car was $1200. Though a sweeper or blower would really be a nice thing to have to save some tires and bumper paint.

After getting rid of the excess rubber in my rotors from the karts the previous week at the SE lot, you'd think we could get a leaf blower. I've made this suggestion several times before. Are the Dbs too high?

Other clubs have tried using a leaf blower and it is not the solution. It doesn't pick-up the debris, just moves it around. The Stadium has a worn out mechanical sweeper that does a marginal job when it works and they have the time (opportunity) to sweep.

Another alternative is to hire a commercial sweeping company. An additional expense.

We make allot of money on autocrosses, I don't see how hiring some one to sweep the track would blow the budget.

I have a vendor that sweeps for me at $75/hr with a 2.5 HR minumum. And he can do it at 4am if we wanted him. The only problem is that the brooms on those machines would do a marginal job of picking up the larger and "stuck" debris. It should do a fairly good job picking up the smaller stuff--the larger rubber pieces will most likely still have to be removed manually. I would think it would be worthwhile to give it a try---If I had to pay an extra coupla bucks for an AX with a clean track--I would be happy to pitch in. The OC AX's are at least 20 dollars more than SDR.

If you contact the special events coordinator (used to be Ms. "Enid"), a sweeper will be scheduled for a prior-event sweeping.

Getting a "contract" sweeper might not be permissable on the Stadium lot since it's controlled by the city. They have the resources and manpower to handle the sweeping (as well as paving, port-o-pot rentals, etc) and have been known to block "outside" companies for certain services on occasion (like paving repair ).

I'd recommend contacting Enid (if she's still the person to call) prior to having a contractor doing it. You may have to pay the contractor a full fee and still not get the sweeping done if the stadium "blocks" the contractor .

Note of History: I used to call Enid on the Monday before an event when I was AX co-chair. She usually had the lot swept by Thursday, or Friday by her staff. I had about 95% cooporation from them. It wasn't perfect, but it was a heck of a lot cleaner than it's been the last couple of years.

There was talk among the different clubs about hiring sweepers after the San Diego St games and Saturday Charger games for a quick turnaround so an event could be run the next day. There didn't seem to be a problem with the stadium.
But, like Dan says you should check with who ever is now in charge.

Let's see, I pay 40.00 for early reg, hmmm what's another $2.50 - $3.00 for the sweeper - it could buy me another .05-.10 sec on the timed runs

1. If a game occurs the night before an event we have it swept.
2. The stadium sweeps prior to our events, but as Ted stated their equipment is not the greatest. This of course only if they have an event the night before ours. Their sweeper also leaves those 6" long metal things you find on the course.
3. We'll see what we need to do to have a clean course prior to the Oct. AX. This is not a promise just a statement that we will check.

Enid Warnock is the Stadium Special Events Coordinator and our contact person. Only authorized club members should contact her about our Stadium activities.

Again, the Stadium sweeps the lots when they have the resources. Their equipment is old, retired, Street Division machinery. The other thing is they do not necessairly wet sweep. Having the spray bar wet the surface helps to pick up the debris. An analogy is the effectiveness of a damp rag vs. a dry rag. Ron is correct in pointing out the gutter brooms often spit out bristles, far more lethal to your tires.

There are requirements that any vendor/contractor working at the Stadium must meet. Perhaps there is a vendor who has a vacuum sweeper.

Give the autocross chairs an opportunity to do some research.

Just an idea... Our landlord here at Autobahn has a crew that shows up Saturday and blows the rocks, nuts bolts, leaves, trash etc into the corner of the lot and then they sweep it up by hand. They use the backpack type blowers and they are very powerful. I think you could almost fly with one

Maybe you 944 guys should strap one to the back of the water-pumpers for some extra uhmph!
