Dec 6th Tour. Hunting the perfect curve on Palomar Mtn.

Postby MR LIPP on Wed Oct 29, 2008 7:24 pm

Saturday Dec 6th 7:00 meet. For everyone who has complained that the tours were a bit too leisurely, I present you with a type 4 tour up and down Mount Palomar, Mesa Grande and few more exciting roads. No beer, no wine just roads. Who is game?
This is not a racing event, just a spirited drive with safety as priority #1 and a chance to give your tires and suspension a work out.

Looking forward to it Martin.......

I'm sure that there will be flyers on the website calendar and in the Witless detailing more about meeting place and start times etc. but I must admit - I am intrigued by the first response post to your thread titled "Dec. 6th Tour......" with a question like

"When?" ??????????

I guess that is a typical "old retired guy" kind of response! :D

So anyway .. what is the date you have in mind for this Dec 6th tour?

(Please type your reply slowly - for those from El Cajon who don't read fast).

You might be having trouble with your Spanglish, Keith. His location is La Mesa, not El Cajon. :D

I'm in.

I have an old car so we will have to take it easy, or have a map so I can meet up later...

I assume the date is Dec. 6?

sounds like fun.....I do this drive about once a month on sunday mornings. I did it last weekend, 78 to the 79 to the S7 to the S6 back to the 76.

Lemme tell you there were LOTS of CHP on this route last sunday. I almost bought a ticket going past a very well hidden cruiser who was positioned on the 79 about a mile before you turn right on the S7. He was off on the shoulder behind trees at a blind curve...waiting to pounce.

and on the bikes....lately they seem to like coming in from the 76 and as they go up S6 they are getting so leaned over on those uphill blind curves..........if you are going down and dont stay well to the right......or overcook a turn you will eat a motorcycle for breakfast.

having said that I am IN. :burnout:

If you go on Mesa Grande Road, be on lookout for a very wicked right hander coming from Dudley's at location B on this map (http://maps.yahoo.com/#mvt=m&lat=33.150 ... 116.779865)

The problem with this corner is:
It is on the back side of a rise in the road, so you can't see the turn. The general geography and the overhead powerlines conspire to make you think the road dives into the valley straight ahead. It doesn't. There is an abrupt right turn less than 100 ft after the rise. The outside of the curve is a nice little bowl that may or may not require a tow truck for extraction.

Most of my activity up there is has been on motorcycle, so the turn is a little easier to see. Once, I was up there in my 914, and I KNEW the corner was up ahead. I was going slow(er) and I still missed the turn. I tried to make it but spun the car off to the outside of the corner.

Hi GT3girl

I was on Palomar on Sunday and the roads great , a bit of gravel here and there , but that woulda been scrubbed off by now .
I sure it will be fine.
