Hi gang,

Can anyone recommend a tire shop in the North County that can shave a set of tires for me? Thanks in advance.

It's not North County, but Gerry Gutuirez at Discount Tire on Genessee can shave tires and takes care of PCA members.

I went down to Discount Tire this morning and spoke with Gerry. Unfortunately, they do not shave tires there (they can heat-cycle them though). I then went over to JMC Motorsports to talk with them. They are no longer in business.

Then, over to Mirage. After a few phone calls, it became apparent that no one in San Diego can shave tires.

Oh well. At least I got my wild goose-chase out of the way for the weekend.

Sorry about that. I could have sworn that they shaved a set for me around 2 years ago. Today at the AX, Carl Scragg said that he didn't think they shaved either as he would have had them do his as well.

Sounds like a business plan for somebody!

C2 Motorsports on Vickers can shave tires. Steve Coe is a great guy and really takes care.

I tried C2 yesterday too. And they do shave tires. Unfortunately, their shaving machine is broken.

At the suggestion of Martin schacht w/ the POC, I'm going to try Precision Service Racing Group, Inc., in Rancho Santa Margarita tomorrow.

Jeez...that great deal I got on a new set of RA-1's is starting to seem like maybe just an average deal.......

Sube Sports in Orange county is where I have been going lately. Not that far away, large selection, great customer service. Then again, they were affiliated with JMC, so call first.

C2 Motorsports should have their tire shaving machine up and running shortly, it is being serviced. They also carry a selection of helmets, gloves, belts, all the things that JMC used to. Sad to see JMC/Dave Turner Motorsports go under like that, but such is the nature of business. We can help the racing community rebound by visiting Steve at C2 in Kearny Mesa They also do a heck of a job mounting/balancing tires.

Via the suggestion of a couple of other PCA members, I called Clarence Brown alignment, and they can shave them. Yay!

They said that the tires/wheels need to be on the car while they do it. Does anyone know if that is standard?

If it is done on the car it is really tire truing which is to get rid of undesireable cupping or another issue.
This meathod takes off 1/32 at a time and leaves a smooth surface for quieting down a tire. More than that usually means more cost.
If it is done on a machine it is usually true tire shaving that takes 4-5/32 off the tire in one process. Faster, cheaper but leaves a not so pretty tire until you get some miles/laps on the tires.

Call around and get a price quote for the amount of rubber removed... 1/32 or 5/32's
