PCA SDR

Hey everybody,

Not having read the rules carefully enough before my last SDR DE, I showed up with no fire extinguisher. With help from just about everybody at the event I got on track with a borrowed metal bracket and a Kidde 10-BC extinguisher I bought from Lowe's just up the hill.

Having looked everywhere for the borrowed metal mount, I can't find one like that ANYWHERE. I've checked Home Depot, Lowes, Walmart, online, etc etc.

My fire bottle is one of these:

Can anybody recommend a flat-mount (universal) metal mount that would fit this model? It has a 3.25" diamater.

OR

Can anybody recommend an extiguisher and metal mount combo that isn't $75 or more!

I bought mine at the Home Depot on Genesee in Clairemont, but maybe they don't carry them anymore?

Thanks for the reply. I looked at my local Home Depots and couldn't find any metal mounts.

I also checked that link you sent and couldn't find my model number of fire extinguisher.

I think I'll need to pickup another unit because the one I bought is a Kitchen model...and I guess they don't make metal mounts for residential units.

Put that one in your kitchen then, and get another for the car, Chris. You should be able to find a vehicle mount kit for less than $40. I paid < $30 for the extinguisher and <$7 for the bracket, IIRC.

There is a hardware store, I believe named Marshalls, that is on a side street off Miramar Road, near Mirage, MIS and the old Mind over Motorsports that carries several metal fire extinguisher brackets. Look them up and call as their hours are a little strange (and to get the address).

I was just there a few hours ago and saw a couple.

I have a few halon extinguishers in my garage if anyone is interested...The ones from Home depot 10BC will destroy your electrical system if you use them on your car.

Good point. Also,many of the "chemical" extinguishers that leave a powdery residue can damage aluminum/magnesium parts (cases, heads, etc). The powder is very corrosive, especially if it gets moist/wetted.

Halon extinguishers, while more expensive, emit a halon gas that displaces O2 to extinguish fires and leaves no corrosive residue. At least that is what I've been told. The only downside to halon: if the fuel/spark source is not eliminated, fires can re-ignite when the halon gas receeds. Again, so I've been told.

So maybe a little more expensive, but Halon may be a better way to go. You may wish to do some research.

Just a thought.

Just FYI - I spoke to two different Home Depot parts guys, in two different stores, and both said they stopped carrying the brackets about a year ago.
Jeff over at Black Forest found a pretty heavy duty two-piece mount that works in my Boxster with the Kidde 10BC unit (using the Brey-Krause underseat bracket mount).
