Hello all,

I just wanted to say hi and hope to meet you all during one of the XCross events at the Q. I am currently trying to restore a very abused 1981 Euro 928. As soon as I can get her smogged, I will be attending the XCross Events to have some fun. I was looking at some of the pics and usually only see one lone 928 out there. Are we an accepted breed? :burnout:

We love 928's... they are fun to chase in the corners. Here is a good video for you.

Great video! I may be blind but where is the 928? :burnout:

Sean,
Great video! I even resemble some of those "situations".

MPDano - check out the big cloud of smoke around half way through. Its a 928 spin with someone that keeps a bunch of 928's running (and aligned). :roflmao:

Welcome! You will soon meet a bearded guy with a camera named Gregg Phillips who has a little experience with 928s. Based on your avatar you will get along just fine.

Oh, I had to watch the video again. I thought the 928 was braking because the 944 was going the wrong way. Happens you know :beerchug: Yeah, I know I drive a heavy beast and will most likely be the slowest 928 out there with a 16V 4.5, but it's all for just having a good time  Right?

I must confess, that 944 going the wrong way would be me. ( I DID wave as Sean passed me, though.) At least you are driving a water cooler, so several of us like you already. We may be a rowdy bunch on line, but are safe on the tracks so please disregard this spin. I meant to do that...yeah right. Welcome to the fold.

Thanks Jackie for the welcome. I know we are all just harmless playing and encourage the fun. I think spinning out is critical to learning your own cars limits. Now how's that for an excuse :burnout:

Sorry, been away for awhile as the times are forcing me to work harder and longer at work. I've been driving my 928 to and from work at least a couple times per week, since I know CIS need to be ran and not stagnant. I really want to get into AX but really need to get my Suspension worked up first (Alignment, Shocks, Boots, etc).

How many 928's do we have running AX's these days?

Welcome.

We basically have Mark Matsumoto and his beautiful 928 running these days. Greg Phillips has "crossed over" and now has a 911 so who knows what he will show up in. I can't remember how many 928's Greg has in his garage - he can be a good rescource for you.

I love the sound of the 928 so the more the merrier.

Hi Leo, welcome aboard!

Looking over the past year's attendance, I find three other 928's running, each in a different class:

1985 928S, Coolhand Rossitto, #230, II – Apr A/X only
1986 928S, Greg Phillips, #928, JP – Jan A/X only
1991 928, Mark Matsumoto, #448, KSS – All A/X except April and May

I suggest you forget about doing any suspension work other than what is required to pass technical inspection. The goal is not to be fast out of the box, but to learn as soon as possible. Some of the best advice I've gotten is to keep the car as plain vanilla as possible in the beginning. That way you learn about driving at the limit while those limits are low.

You'll get a better sense of "getting it right" when you're in a stock car
It's much nicer to lose control in a stock setup at 40 mph than a bad-ass setup at 70 mph
You know that increases in performance are due to better driving, not go-fast parts
You save money by not getting - er - go-fast parts

When you truly can out-drive your car in its stock configuration, then you should consider upgrading. Until then, just drive.

What Andy said!!!!

Couldn't have said it better.
Come on down and we will have Greg or Mark be your instructor to show how it is done properly in a 928! :beerchug:

Thanks Guys for the warm welcome. The Suspension stuff I was talking about is deferred maintenance stuff. I wasn't looking to put any "Upgrades," but to just get it back to original stocks safeness. Shocks and CV Boots are probably the original 30 years olds. Alignment is off but not by much, I just want it to be right on, which means changing the rack boots then Alignment. Economy says "not at this time Leo."

I would like to try and at least be a spectator at the next AX to see what it's all about.

In that case, here's a plan for you.

First, have someone pre-tech your car. I don't know how much (or if) they charge, but they'll give you an honest assessment of what, if anything, you really need to fix. For more details, contact any of these folks:

Dieter's Porsche
619.234.8106

Black Forest
858.292.1192

Mirage Int.
858.581.1101

European Motorsports
760.599.9307

Come to the Aug 23rd A/X with your car. Even if you don't run, people you talk to will ask what you're driving, and it's cool to just point and say "that".

Assuming you just want to check things out, you will need to sign the release form to get a wrist band. Once that's done, you should have no problem getting some rides around the track with an instructor if any are available.

If your car checks out ok at the pre-tech and you decide to jump in with both feet, rest assured this is precisely 7 tons of fun. There is no pressure to perform. In fact, your instructor will most likely emphasize slower laps so you can get the rhythm of it. Everyone starts out slowly, and there's no expectations of you other than to be safe, listen to your instructor, enjoy the snot out of your car, and come away with a better sense of what you and your car are capable of.

Besides, the drinks are free!

Slow?? That's no fun, I was gonna go pedal to the metal first time out

Just kidding.

Do they do the pre-tech at the AX? Or is this done at one of the shops you listed?

It's pretty fugly right now, being black primered and all, but runs great :burnout:
