Holy crap! Perusing Autoweek last night, I came across and most interesting headline: "Japanese GT Championship comes to US." If anyone is unfamiliar with the series, it is the fastest GT cars on the planet  and they are coming to Fontana December 18-19 to challenge all comers.

Though we have an autocross on the 18th, I plan on hooking it up there afterwards to see the race. Here is some more info:

GT Live will take place December 18 & 19, 2004 at California Speedway in Fontana, California. The main attraction will be the JGTC 2004 All-Star show, featuring at least 20 top cars invited from Japan, as well as local entries. This All-Star show will feature the first-ever JGTC night race, The JGTC ALL-STAR 200 on Saturday the 18th and two 24-minute sprint races on Sunday the 19th called JGTC ALL-STAR SPRINTS. As if that were not enough to get you excited, we have also joined forces with D1 to present you the D1 GP US vs. Japan Pro Drifting Exhibition. And there is Formula D on Saturday, as well as a new drifting format called Xtreme Drifting League (XDL). The XDL runs complete laps and has no judging. It will also feature innovations such as sedan and truck drifting. As you can tell, GT Live is the biggest event of its kind.

But we are not done yet. For the tuner freaks we’ll have a tuner time attack and the Turbo High-Tech Performance dyno challenge. If you’d like to experience the thrill of getting a ride with a race car driver, we’ve set aside 4 hours of track time just for that. And if participation is more your thing then we can offer you a whole bunch more too. You can drive your own car in the GT Autocross, drive production cars in the GT Ride & Drive, drive a go-kart, drive an RC car enter in the Super Street car show in the garage area, get into the Car Audio & Electronics audio challenge, display your car with your car club and participate in the fan lap.

Not to forget, you can meet all the JGTC, D1, Formula D, XDL and Time Attack drivers for autographs and photos, and you can hang with the race queens during our JGTC Pit Walk, podium ceremonies or even the pre-grid activities. And, since it is the weekend before Christmas we made sure you would have plenty of shopping in our exhibitor’s area.

They had a booth at the Grand Am race a couple weeks ago. Pretty cool stuff. Looks like it would be a fun race to attend.

Sounds interesting...at least the racing part. I'm not so big on power sliding though ( what the uninformed idiots call drifting). I spend the second half of every turn trying to avoid power sliding (what the uninformed idiots call drifting). Hhmmph!

Oh relax Tim, I have seen you practicing some drifting on fun runs  It may not be fast, but it can be fun. Of course, I thought the GT racing series was a real race, not a drifting series? Isn't it their version of Austrailian V8 supercars or Nascar with left and right turns?

Ok, I'm relaxed now................ they're still idiots if they call powersliding(yes, fun) "drifting".
It's not drifting and it introduces a misnomer that will cause confusion. If you saw me do it, it was a mistake. Bad Timmy!
I just wish they would call it what it is. Power sliding.
Kids these days.........

For those of us that are also NASA members, here is some additional info:

...GT Live features a first-ever U.S. appearance for the Japanese touring car series, better known as JGTC....GT Live will also showcase a Time Attack event and ride-alongs with race car drivers in the GT Demo Runs. If you are more into driving than watching you can run your own car in the GT Autocross (that NASA is hosting), drive a car provided by a manufacturer in the GT Ride & Drive Autocross, hop into a go-kart or pilot an RC car.

NASA members will receive a special package that allows access to the NASA VIP suite above pit row, and an event t-shirt, all at no extra charge just for being a NASA member!!

GT Live takes place December 18 & 19, 2004 at California Speedway. Tickets are $50 for a weekend pass and $35 for single day passes and can be purchased at http://www.jgtcusa.net/promo/nasa.php, or by calling 866.500.JGTC.

Dave, this looks like a pretty cool event. Maybe I can practice my Japanese and get a pro ride for this event. I've got to know the track better than all those guys put together.
