Dear Mr. President,

Please find below my suggestion for fixing America's economy. Instead of giving billions of dollars to companies that will squander the money on lavish parties and unearned bonuses, use the following plan. You can call it the Patriotic Retirement Plan:

There are about 40 million people over 50 in the work force. - Pay them $1 million apiece severance for early retirement with the following stipulations:

1) They MUST retire. Forty million job openings - Unemployment fixed.

2) They MUST buy a new American CAR. Forty million cars ordered - Auto Industry fixed.

3) They MUST either buy a house or pay off their mortgage - Housing Crisis fixed.

It can't get any easier than that!

P.S. If more money is needed, have all members in Congress and their constituents pay their taxes...

Seems like a perfectly thought out solution. That is exactly why our government won't do it. If you think the current batch of American made cars were questionable at times just imagine how wonderful they will be when Congress and the Pres run the company. I'll wager one of the new models will be a "BARNEY"

I've said for some time now...we have lived through the "Golden Age Of The Automobile".

When car companies made individual cars with their own creativity and ideas...people voted with their check books. Some great...some not so great. Remember the "Finned" cars of the late '50s...you may love them or hate them...but it was your choice.

Hot Rodders started doing their thing many, many years ago and governments tried to shut them down with ever "Mickey Mouse" way they could.

We may be coming to the age of government run car manufactures...with the governments telling all of us what to drive...like little robots.

Note that Porsche claim they have a double digit profit margin.

Forbes a few years ago reported the profit margins on Porsche vehicles and the average was around 25% as I recall, this in an industry where 5% is a lot.

Imagine, if Porsche did not have the value added of their brand, and had to compete at usual industry levels of profit, Porsche would sell cars for ~ 20% less than they do. A Boxster would start at around $37,000 and a 911 would start at around $61,000.

And let's not forget about the 2002-tax-reduction-built "George W" .; the " 'merican-made " car to replace the "VW." This "George W" was a car that was built with no computers on board. As the designer, G. W. Bush would always remind us: "Who needs brains? They just add extra weight. Cars don't need brains. Heck, I didn't."
