Poll: Mini-autocross at Coronado. Instructors please respond

The whole point of doing the DE and the autocross is impress certain holders of valuable parking lot areas that we can manage a safe event. Unfortunately the autocross area at Coronado during the Speed Fest is only 1,000 by 200 feet. This length is about the same as the south end of west lot (south of trolly) with the width being from the K-rail to the light posts. We had some major concerns about putting on a safe event and using the minimum safe distances from K-rail. The lot size only allows for a modified slalom course. You would be able to drive the distance of approximately 4,000 feet by doing 2 up and back laps with only one car on track at a time. I am guessing that we can handle 60 "laps" per hour.
We need only 3 people to control the track (1 grid organizer, 1 starter, and 1 corner worker).
We want to offer this event to instructors for FREE with the idea that we will be giving rides to Navy people and possibly charge non-club members for rides to help us pay for the whole event. We need to know if instructors would be willing to burn some tires and gas in order to put some smiles on sailors' faces and get us brownie points with the Navy. My idea is to put on an event that they will be buzzing about for days.
I also have some fun ideas for incentives for instructors.
I hope the event runs better than my graphic, but you get the idea. :roflmao: :roflmao: :roflmao:

Jim Binford wrote:First of all the prime objective of conducting the Thur DE event is to demonstrate to both the Navy (NASNI and Fleet Week personnel) as suggested in previous meeting with CO NASNI that PCASDR can coordinate and conduct a safe track event with the intent to move forward after Fleet Week to attempt to gain further access to other NASNI base facilities such as Imperial Beach for future track events. Naturally all DE participants should have a fun DE track day but all attendees should understand the ultimate goal in this Endeavour and be on their best driving behavior.

A second objective was born out of negotiations with Fleet Week personnel when we first were informed of the $25K to gain access to overtime set up for the Thur DE event and we were unable to reduce the DE cost but were offered / negotiated additional no charge carrots to make the DE cost somewhat more palatable. The no cost throw ins were additional track space for an Sat /Sun autocross like event and a Sat noon time 2-3 lap taste of the Vintage track following a pace car. This opportunity provided led to discussion of conducting an autocross as another NASNI track venue for our club to further demonstrate to Navy that we could successfully run another track type venue. After determining that the size of the space offered would not accommodate a competitive points event autocross as originally desired, the secondary objective evolved to focus more on generating additional public relations with both Navy, San Diego community, and PCASDR attendees of the Vintage race weekend to provide a mini-autocross for free track rides to NASNI military /Fleet Week VIPS and deserving sailors to ride in instructor cars. Also we felt that by having the mini- autocross site close to the weekend PORSCHE Corral that we could offer the Corral attendees, at a nominal fee to generate some revenue / charity funds , either instructor rides or drive their cars with an instructor shotgun (the set up is a low key slow speed track indoctrination event). Since the track venue would be observed by many Fleet Week attendees it would have high visibility and should generate good PR for our club as well as Navy good will. I encourage all to go to Fleet Week Website (fleetweeksandiego.org) and page through the info to see what a big event this is and the community coordination / mission by FleetWeek organization). Again I wanted to ensure the objectives are understood as planning goes forth which will be a significant effort by our club to successfully accomplish but given the talent of our club members the objectives should be acheivable.

Martin - I'll help as needed. You are my master....?

I like the idea of putting this on for Saturday and Sunday as it will increase our exposure (a lot of folks only visit for one day), show we can run multiple events and may increase our cash intake.

We could also run the mini-AX from 10-3/4 for both days? I doubt there will be many regular folks wanting to ride along before 10? Just a thought.

Bill
A limited schedule is a good idea as it will give instructors a chance to enjoy other Speed Fest activities.
I found this new graphic that summarizes everything on the mini-autocross.

BTW, is it my imagination, or does that little graphic 911 blow by one of the cones once in a while?
Weird, isn't it? :roflmao: :roflmao: :roflmao:

Martin, if that's the only problem you see with the car going around the cones, I've got a tip for you that's sure to improve your lap times! :burnout:

I'm down for at least a half day, maybe a whole one. I'll likely be driving Kelsey's car (shhhhh.....she might be listening) because it's so much easier to load multiple non-racers into a car without race seats and belts.

Hawaii. One month wasn't enough, we should have stayed two.
Had to come back and make some money....damn......besides, there's no racing of any kind in the islands and everyone drives 40mph. It gets to you after a while.

So if I tech one car for the DE, that sticker will "migrate" to my other car for the mini-AX?
