924S Wheel and Tire upgrade question.

Hi folks.
As soon as I sell the Honda XR250 in the classifieds I will be looking to buy some wheels for the 924S. I have been told that I need the “Late offset (53.8mm) with abs from a 87-89 944S” ( Is that correct?). I would think the 15in. version will get me just a little closer to the ground but hear that the 16s are much more available. Having said that, what size tires will I be running? Sorry for the extreme nubishness of the question.
Best wishes to you all during this sacred season.
Mark

The offset is 52.3, I RUN 225/50/16 ON MY 944, Much better choice of tires in 16"
WHAT CLASS ARE YOU GOING TO RUN IN?

I'm running 225/50/16 or 225/45/16 size tires and they work fine. I went with 16's because the wheels were easier to find.

Tuffy has already had the front sway bar upgraded to the M030. I am unsure, but that may push him into GS class already. I hope to do the rear eventually sway bar too and spend some points in suspension (that's the long range plan). Looks like GS for me. Though I don't have the wheels yet, the reason I am asking is that I have an appointment with a possible tire sponsor this week and one of the questions asked was "What size tires?".
Thanks for the info guys. It gives me the ability to speak simi-intelligently with the rep.

Dont go softer than a 140 treadwear tire, and you can be in GSS.

I've got an extra set of 16's from a 968 (52mm offset, 7's and 8's), as well as an 18mm rear bar from a 944 turbo if you're interested. The wheels aren't concours ready, but they're straight. I'd call them "nice" track wheels.
PM me if you want them,
Chris

If you want to put 225's (6-7 inch) in front or 245's (8 Inch) in Rear on 924S you have to Roll/grind the lip from 10 to 2 o'clock under the finders. You will also need 2 & 1/2 degree's neg camber+ and 2.5" springs vs the 5" stock. 924S were made for 205's
I run 16" for more choices and Tubro Brakes, but would agree if you are not running turbo brakes, go with the 15" Also the Toyo RA1 are available in 15" while you can only get the R888's in 16".
Also if you decide later to go 944/924S spec you have to run the 15".
15" is a couple pounds lighter. Tires are about 10% cheaper on the 15".

Hmmmm, Seems that I am getting different answers from different quarters.
JIM: Others have informed me that the 225's should just bolt right on front and rear if they are the late turbo with abs offset. But I am to take it that is not your experience? I don't mind a camber change and a careful inner fender-lip roll, but don't want to get into switching out the Weltmeister springs that are on the front. If its true that I have to run 205's well...ok...but then would I be looking for other wheels than the ones listed above? It would be good to get a clear consensus as I want to hunt the right items.
All you knowledgeable 944/924 experts...chime in please.

I dont know where some people are getting their information but...
You want 7x15 phone dials with the 52.3mm offset. These wheels come off the 944S 1987-1988. Thats it!
Nothing else shy of custom wheels will fit with 225's on them with out cutting and grinding. And if you want to run 205's you can stay with the stock 6 inch wide wheels or use cookie cutters, i tried this and it woked.
I believe Sean at Autobahn had a set of the wheels you need. Orrrrr you can search clarks garage, ebay, craigslist and the junkyards.
ask Tim Comeau as well, but since he still has his 924S he probably will keep all that he has.
Also, your car technically needs to be in GS even with street tires because of the front springs and front sway bar.I replaced them with 250lb springs...and the front sway bar is the MO30 if you want the stock ones i can give those to you. But technically the car only has 4 points already because of these parts. 4 to go if you stay in GS!
Good luck next year!

Mark,
I have a set of 16 x 7 BBS wheels that will fit your 924S. The wheels will be available after December 19th. I will have them on my car at the other car AX and the Instructor AX. Feel free to check them out. They are superlight and have the correct offset.
You can run in GSS with up to 6 points as long as the tires are 140 treadwear or above. See below.
1. STREET STOCK CLASSES Street Stock is divided into two sub-classes, roughly based on vehicle age:
For classes A – J. The purpose of this sub-class is to provide a class for the older car where “as delivered” condition is near impossible to maintain due to the un-availability or extreme expense of OEM parts. The car must be registered for street use. This class is open to any car having 0-6 modification points inclusively (as determined in Section III) except that the following modifications are not allowed:a) Any DOT street legal tire with a tread wear rating of less than 140
b) Any tire that is not street legal
c) Aftermarket mass airflow kits
d) DME chips
e) Modifications that require 100+ octane fuel
f) Lightweight flywheels
g) Removal of weight, and/or redistribution of weight (other than for Section XIII Part L or unavailability or impracticality of OEM parts, such as bumper replacement. Points must be taken for the latter, as applicable.)

The Toyo R-888 tires ARE available in 15" - 205/50-15, 225/50-15, 225/45-15, and 235/50-15 (the last one probably won't fit Tuffy).
I used the early 928 7x15 Phone Dials on my 924 Turbo, which have 65mm offset (IIRC). Those can be used on the 924S,
but might need spacers and longer studs. I ran them with 6mm spacers on my 924 Turbo, and slightly rolled the fender lips.
If you're considering 16" tires, I imagine early 928 7x16s would work similarly, but I'm not sure.

Paul, The BBS Wheels I have are the ones that were on your 928. They work great.

Morgan,
Thanks for the clear answers. Thanks also for your patience as I know you told me this at one point...then I got all muddled up with the various input. Which isn't a surprise as with my life lately a condition of "full muddle" is just one stir away.
Mark,
Thanks as well for the clearification regarding classes. The tires I am working on are within the limit for GSS. I hope to be at the 12th even just to hang out and help.
Mark
Paul,
Also good infor to hav..e...ohh....noo...feeling a "muddle' comming on...
Of course ALL of this could be easily settled by just running the 205/50R15 that my potential tire sponsor makes, on the wheels that are on Tuffy now and consider the .7" loss of tread width an "extra challenge."
