Porsche Sedan & Boxster Coupe

Reading through the new issue of Panorama and saw an article talking about Porsche opening up a "4th line" in the form of a V8 Sedan and of course the introduction of the Boxster Coupe next year.

Do you think we are seeing the end of the 911 on the horizon?

While Porsche may not listen to their customers and fans about participating more in big time racing they do seem to listen to the need to keep the 911 around. They have tried to phase it out in the past, the 928 was once meant to be a replacement for the aging 911, with sharp backlash from the Porsche community. I would think the 911 is safe for a long future.

I was under the impression that Porsche stopped building the 911 in 1998. :lol:

I think some people have been "planted" to destroy Porsche's reputation from the inside out...........

Technically, didn't they stop building the "911" in 1988? It's only 911 now in name and spirit (maybe?). But the 911 model designation has been long gone for some time now.

I haven't read the Pano, but rumor has it that shortly after the Coupe is introduced they will also market a Clubsport version. 'Course we probably will not see it here in the US. But at least they'll have one.

Mike, I think this depends who you talk to.

911 was a (auftragsnummer) project number at one point. I call my car a 964, because that is its design number. So, if you ask me the auftragsnumber 356, 911, 912 etc have been discounted a long time ago, but the name 911 will be here for ever.

I think the original design number was 901 and that the cars were presented by Porsche as the new 901, but Peugot complained that they had trademarked model numbers with a zero in the middle, and who wants to argue with the French, so it became the 911. Lots of parts numbers are still 901 -xxxxxxx from those origins.

Yep. That's accurate, Greg. But if you just argue for a little while with the French,.........they'll surrender. :P

Also, Sei Vorsichtig (be careful) with the difference between project numbers and car model numbers.
For those who don't know the difference, project 912 is not the 4 cyl. model 912.
Who can tell me what project 912 was? :)

Let's get back to the fourth car line. I bought Porsche's Cayene development strategy in order to maintain financial stability and independence. With Cayene's solid success, I'm afraid Porsche will think more is better and move on to a fourth car line in the form of a performance sedan.

As a performance car fan this sucks since I doubt they would launch a fourth line and do any serious prototype racing development. It seems Porsche is happy supporting GT racing and stopping there. We want more!

Wouldn't a Boxster Coupe with GT3 running gear be a delight? :shock:

It seems it would be relatively easy to do:

-GT3 front suspension is a bolt in.

-GT3 Brakes are essentially a bolt on.

-The GT3 gearbox is cable shifted so the shifter should be easy, so all one would have to do is flip the ring gear to the other side of the gearbox to get things going the right way.

-Body sheet metal would probably have to be changed a touch to accomodate the dry sump engine. The filler for the oil tank could be on the drivers side in the rear trunk.

The only unknown is the rear suspension and what would be required there. Porsche has solved bigger problems....so it seems the only "Real Problem" is their self imposed marketing paradigm :lol:

Yes, it would! If have been thinking about this very thing for many months now.

The rear suspension of the Boxster is the 996's front reversed (i.e. LF == RR, RF == LR). So the only real problem is finding the cash to "make it so"!

If I had the $40K to make it happen this is exactly what I would do with my Boxster. At least until the Coupe is available.
